You’ve heard the roar. But did you know it started in Memphis? 🦁🎬

Long before becoming the face of MGM, the iconic lion in the movie studio’s logo was filmed right here at the Memphis Zoo. In the 1920s, the original MGM lion—named Slats—was recorded in Memphis by cinematographer and animal trainer Volney Phifer.

Phifer had raised Slats since it was a cub. When MGM needed a logo that would roar across theaters nationwide, they turned to Phifer and his lion—and Memphis provided the perfect backdrop. Slats never actually roared (silent films, after all), but his fierce stare made moviegoers take notice.

So next time you hear that famous MGM growl, remember: part of that Hollywood magic roared to life right here in the 901.
