a great night’s sleep and/or a peaceful, possibly drool-y nap are a huge part of what epps and i want for swan cottage (we do strive to provide an elevated guest experience!) in my quest to use only found or handed-down pieces to furnish the cottage (except *of course* the mattresses and linens are brand-new!) here’s a quick tour of what we used for the ‘bunk room’ (which will hopefully have 4 built-in bunks someday…and something on the window soon.)

for now, it sleeps two in a pair of log beds from when our boys were little.

mr. j’s cousin married the founder of blue dog furniture in missoula, mt, and keith made the beds for us, then they were in our attic for a while. miraculously, only the little pegs that hold them together were missing. i’ll confess, i spit out coffee laughing when epps said he would just ‘whittle us some new ones’…but he DID!

so they don’t completely overwhelm the room, i gave them a wash of antique white jolie paint.

other sources: 26-year-old ralph lauren ‘wilson’ plaid coverlets, faux-wolf pillows, & vintage yakima blankets from the original boys’ room • gingham cases • faux hudson bay stripe pillows made by me using a drop cloth, jolie paints, and inserts • audubon plates & prints and the rug from my M-I-L’s attic • wall sconces from • bedside table is an estate sale find • bedside lamp is a vintage demijohn from made into a lamp at lampshade house, memphis.

sleep well!

go on, gasp in horror - but in my how-to-make-a-new-build-feel-old swan cottage strategy sesh with , we decided to forgo closets and dormer window seats in the guest rooms, adding a whopping 60 square feet to each.

instead, john suggested using furniture as storage and places to set and unpack bags (along with a few hooks) since it’s is a weekend-duffel bag kind of spot. (ps - we have two amazing storage closets upstairs, carved out of the attic space.)

anyway, this cute cabinet popped up on fb marketplace. it was missing its glass front, had a tentative coat of paint on it, and was $75. (swipe for the before.)

i painted the inside with some leftover swedish grey/gesso white mix from the floor project, and used low-sheen finishing cream to seal it.

the outside is done with boxwood, an all-time fave color, sealed with clear wax from jolie, followed by miss mustard seed’s antiquing wax.

to replace the missing glass, a piece of antiqued mirror would have been perfect…but also a little spendy, and i worried about making the piece too front-heavy, since it’s already a bit wobbly.

so, i dug around in the chicken wire stash in our garage, and - SO LUCKY - found one scrap that was a lighter gauge and smaller mesh pattern. i trimmed it, stapled it in, and reattached the little furring strips.

the drawer handles just weren’t cute, so i filled the outer-edge holes before painting and replaced those with brass k***s left from another project. (the original k**b on the door polished up nicely.)

but then, the silver of the chicken wire bothered me. so i got out my brass liquid leaf and dabbed it on. (i know, i know - no one cares but me! but i do.)

so, if you come and stay in parker & will’s room, here are your spare quilts and pillows, extra toiletries, and a good book to read and take home if you don’t finish it.

put your bags on the old blue bench (that’s the original finish, btw) and check your gorgeous sunkissed face in the mirror from my M-I-L’s attic.

after careful consideration following arrow creative’s closing announcement (plus listening to the universe, mr. jones, our accountant, and the swans,) and with a heart full of gratitude, i’ve decided that it’s time for me to join epps in retirement.

i am enormously, endlessly thankful for the opportunities to work with so many of you on fun projects, and appreciate your support and loyalty to my little shops, as well as your having trusted me with your cherished pieces. my customers are the best!

of course, this calls for one last celebration. after the holidays, let’s have drinks (and a blowout studio & attic sale)…watch this space for details.

in the meantime, you can continue to find paint, sundries & IOD products through 12/31. my birthday sale (on now) will segue into a retirement sale, so stock up for your 2025 projects. i won’t be placing any reorders, so pop by soon for the best selection.

you’re not rid of me yet, and i’ll continue to post things that are (hopefully!) inspiring and instructive here. there are some events and fun to come…stay tuned.

finally, in a preaching-to-the-choir moment (because if you’ve been with me this far, you’re already keenly aware…) if you want to live in a world with a thriving arts community and unique/special/interesting/fun places to learn and shop and gather…support them. show up at gallery openings, exhibits, book signings, and events. buy tickets and go to performances. like and share creatives’ social media posts. shop your local shops and leave nice reviews. go listen to live music. go to a ballgame and cheer like crazy. give theatre tickets and museum memberships as gifts - then grab that person and GO. (and eat at a local restaurant before or after.)

please do those things now. today. this weekend. *this* holiday season.

otherwise, all we’ll have is big box/online stores and streaming services. not to sound alarmist, but it’s happening already…please close your laptop, hit ‘off’ on the remote, get up, stretch, and go do whatever you can to support the kind of community you want to live in.

thank you - all of you! - for all the adventures and fun we’ve had together. now, go make something pretty! happy painting. xo

my mission? to keep trying to create something useful (and hopefully pretty) out of something worn or broken.

this latest exercise in reclamation, repair, and healing was to take a slightly shredded cross-stitched quilt that my grammy odie made in the early ‘70’s, and turn salvageable sections into pillows. i added XXL rickrack as a nod to that groovy era - but also because i love it! - and miraculously had just enough. i used those fab $14 feather euro-sized inserts, and made a simple tie out of scraps for closing the backs.

the thin, soft cotton layers she made it with combined to the perfect weight and warmth. it was a ‘lovie’ for me (before those were really a category of object all their own) and the wear and tear bear that out. after a million washings, it still smells familiar and comfy.

grammy odie made a few kit quilts like this, and taught herself to do the finishing and quilting, too. along with stellar home ec classes, she and my mom taught me to sew.

she was a tough old bird who raised my father and uncle in the 30’s and ‘40’s on her own, after my grandfather (now known simply as the albanian, pictured sitting next to her) bolted. we are not sure we will ever know his given name.

another of her hobbies was researching her genealogy at the . when visiting us, she would take the el there with her tote bag of notebooks and pens, and change for the copier. ironically, everyone whose lives she traced had either left or disowned her (her ‘lovely’ st. louis society fam disapproved of the albanian.) her quilts and research album are all i have of hers, all she left to anyone. but she lived a whole big life, and my amazing dad was quite a legacy.
