i’m going to be brutally honest here for a second...
natalie is insufferable. she’s smug, controlling, and so committed to her own version of perfection that i wanted to reach into the pages and give her a piece of my mind.... but.... i also couldn’t stop reading.
yesteryear was about a tradwife influencer with millions of followers glamorizing the slow life from her ranch in idaho. then one morning she wakes up cold, filthy, and terrified in 1855. same house. no followers. no filter. she experiences a reality check and begins to question whether any of it is real.
this is obviously satire, but it has a heaviness to it and makes you feel uneasy while reading. i also think this book did a really great job of highlighting what performative lifestyle looks like and what happens when that costume becomes the cage.
i can say more about natalie, but you’re just going to have to pick this one up for yourself and make your own judgement ;)
i do also love that anne hathaway will be in the movie version coming out soon too!
i’m pairing it with lowlands because the whole book lives in that world: open fields, warm soil, the wide open prairie there is softness and depth behind the scent that fits so well.
and the song is “people always change” by celeste. her voice is hauntingly beautiful which sets the stage for this sharp and unsettling take on natalie who doesn’t choose to change at all.
