October has us thinking about layers—and these are a few of our favorites. 🍂

Rich wood, a little pattern play, deep green upholstery, and a cozy fireplace worth pulling up a chair for. Together, they give this library warmth, character, and plenty of reasons to settle in.

A quiet chapter, a catch-up with a neighbor, or a little time at the computer—this space makes room for all three. At THD, we love designing senior living spaces with personality and the flexibility to fit everyday life.

𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.
Four days of fresh perspectives, big ideas, and conversations that pushed beyond the usual boundaries of senior living design!

Our Principal, Laura Pask, recently attended the Insights & Innovation Retreat, sponsored by Tarkett and Kwalu , alongside an incredible group of architects, designers, operators, researchers, neuroscientists, and occupational therapists.

Together, they explored the science of belonging—how the environments we create, and even the language we use, influence the way people feel, connect, and experience community.

It was an opportunity to exchange knowledge, challenge long-held assumptions, and reimagine what's possible for the future of senior living.

Laura's biggest takeaway? Belonging isn't simply a nice feeling. It's an essential part of creating environments that support better health and well-being for everyone who lives, works, and visits our communities.

We're grateful to Tarkett, Kwalu, and everyone who brought their expertise and perspectives to the table. These are the conversations that move our industry forward, and we're excited to bring that thinking into what comes next!

Active Aging Week—is a celebration of older adults’ abilities, contributions and the many possibilities of living well at every age. The week challenges outdated ideas about aging and encourages opportunities to get moving, learn something new and stay connected.

A new hobby. A familiar passion. A friendship that starts over morning coffee. Active aging takes many forms, and this week puts those possibilities front and center.

At THD, that’s part of how we think about senior living design: spaces that invite participation, support independence and make everyday experiences worth showing up for.

Here’s to more opportunities to get involved, try something new and keep doing what you love.

Today is World Architecture Day, and this year’s theme, “Housing is a Human Right. Build It.”, is a reminder that what we build matters—and so does how people experience it.

Architecture shapes the communities we call home. Interior design helps shape the life that happens within them. Different disciplines, but two sides of the same coin, working toward environments that support dignity, connection, independence and quality of life.

That feels especially important in senior living, where the places we create become home through some of life’s biggest transitions.

Today, we’re proud to recognize the many talented architects THD has had the privilege of working alongside over the years. Together, we’ve helped create communities designed not simply for aging, but for living well at every age.

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝟱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗿.

Before the furniture, finishes and color palettes, there are bigger decisions that can shape the direction—and ultimately the success—of your renovation.

What are you really trying to accomplish? Who are you designing for now and next? What’s already working? Where should your investment have the greatest impact? And what does success look like when the project is complete?

Having clarity around these questions gives your design team something much more valuable than a wish list. It gives them a purpose to design around—one that considers residents, operations, market positioning and the long-term goals of the community.

At THD, we believe the strongest renovations start with understanding where a community is today, where it wants to go and what design needs to accomplish to help get it there.

Meet our newest intern!😁

Raneem is a senior studying interior design at ASU and is set to graduate next spring. Over the next few months, she’ll be working alongside our Senior Interior Designers on several upcoming projects, gaining hands-on experience and a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to bring a project from concept to reality.

We’re happy to have her with us and even happier to be part of her journey—mentoring the next generation of designers and providing real-world experience along the way.

Fall has officially arrived, and we’re here for the shift. 🍂

There’s something about this season that makes a space feel different. The warmth of a fireplace, deeper tones, layered textures, soft seating and spaces that naturally pull people together.

It’s also a reminder that “cozy” doesn’t have to mean traditional. It can be bold. Sophisticated. Modern. Even a little unexpected.

That balance of warmth and great design is something we love bringing into our senior living communities—not just for fall, but for every season of living.

𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸🛑⚠️
Fall prevention starts with awareness—and thoughtful design.

More than 1 in 4 adults age 65+ reports falling each year, making falls a leading cause of injury among older adults.

Falls can happen for many reasons, from changes in balance and vision to medications and environmental factors. At THD, we focus on the part we can help influence: the spaces residents move through every day.

Clear circulation paths, thoughtful flooring transitions, good lighting, supportive furniture placement, and bathrooms with integrated safety features are all considered as part of the design.

And that's really the goal: creating environments that support safety and independence without sacrificing comfort, beauty, or a sense of home.

Wednesday Materials | Earthy, Layered + Refined

There’s something about an earthy palette that just feels good.

These selections are coming together for Assisted Living and Active Adult common spaces, where warm, grounded tones and layers of natural texture give a subtle nod to Japandi style—simple, organic, and intentionally understated.

Keeping things minimal doesn’t mean keeping things flat. Layers of pattern, texture, and richer tones add depth and an understated sophistication, creating spaces that feel warm, elevated, and inviting.
