Some seeds require a period of natural cold to break dormancy—a process called stratification—and for many temperate perennials and trees, a short, controlled cold treatment (4–10 weeks at about 1–5°C) reliably improves germination uniformity and percentage; skipping stratification can produce slow, uneven sprouting or near-total failure even when moisture and light are correct.
