Notes on a living room, vol. 1 - the Knox Residence.

Before the furnishings, the styling, and the final layers, there’s this - the framework of the room itself. A two-dimensional elevation, carefully composed to define how a space will feel long before it’s ever built.

The placement of trim, lighting, and material transitions is never arbitrary. Every line is considered to create rhythm, balance, and atmosphere, shaping the experience of the person walking into the room.

Sharing a few pages from the Knox living room elevations: the entry wall, dining room casing details, and the fireplace design shown in both its line-drawing and design board forms.

If the floors of Milan had me looking down, the lighting had me looking up!

From delicate calla lily pathway lights to architectural illumination washing entire palazzo façades in a warm glow, every layer of lighting throughout the city felt deeply considered. A sculptural lamp resting on a side table, a chandelier suspended within an arched dining room, the subtle uplighting accentuating centuries-old architecture. Each detail contributed to the atmosphere of a space with quiet intentionality.

It was a reminder that lighting is never a singular decision, but a layered composition. Ambient, accent, architectural, and decorative lighting each play a distinct role in shaping how a space is experienced. The most compelling interiors understand the balance of all four.

While the installations and statement fixtures throughout Design Week were extraordinary, some of the most memorable lighting moments existed beyond the showrooms—in intimate restaurants, historic hotel staircases, and along the exterior facades woven throughout the city itself. Those will be the details and considerations I carry home with me.

Lighting is one of the most transformative elements within a home. When thoughtfully integrated, it moves beyond function and becomes an architectural detail in itself, quietly shaping the entire experience of a space.

Details like this do far more than illuminate. They accentuate materiality, create dimension, and evoke an atmosphere that is often felt before it is consciously noticed.

The most elevated interiors are rarely defined by excess, but by intentionality, and thoughtful lighting is often what gives a space its depth, warmth, and sense of refinement.

While Milan Design Week is celebrated for its furniture, lighting, and iconic showrooms, I found myself equally captivated by what was beneath my feet. From hotel lobbies and boutiques to restaurants and even the sidewalks, the flooring throughout the city is a masterclass in inspiration.

What makes these surfaces so compelling is the level of craftsmanship. Mosaic, terrazzo, marble inlay, parquet—techniques that date back thousands of years on the Italian peninsula. Long before Italy was unified, the Romans were creating intricate stone compositions, a legacy that continues to influence design today.

Salone del Mobile may draw the world to Milan, but the true inspiration lies in the city itself. Art is everywhere—in the rhythm of the streets, the architecture, the storefronts, and the quiet details of spaces you may never step inside.

Keeping a space neutral doesn’t mean the design is simple. In many ways, it’s the opposite.

When our clients ask for a tonal palette, the challenge is to create depth and dimension without relying on color. At our El Dorado project, we layered wood finishes with soft neutrals to anchor each space while maintaining a seamless flow throughout the home.

Through textured materials, subtle shifts in tone, and thoughtful styling, each room feels connected yet distinct. The palette flows seamlessly from room to room, but subtle tonal shifts help define each area and give the eye a place to rest on the details.

A little update from our Durham project! This space started out small and presented quite the challenge (but we love a challenge)! The goal was to reimagine the primary bathroom and closet to improve flow and address storage issues in this West End townhome.

We took it down to the studs and started fresh. A concealed closet combined with glass cabinetry lets us maximize every inch without making the room feel tight. The glass doors allow natural light to filter in while offering gorgeous views of the spa-like shower upon entry.

We paired rift cut white oak cabinetry with travertine slab walls and exaggerated vanity tops keeping the palette tonal letting the finish level be the star. Black hardware and trim add just the right amount of masculinity to the space for effortless, timeless design.

Small but mighty, as they say.
