Talavera tiles are one of the hallmarks of colonial Mexican decor. These folk art style clay tiles are highly prized among people who prefer a rustic or eclectic aesthetic in their homes, particularly for their ability to add immediate bursts of color and interest to kitchen backsplashes, bathtub surrounds, fireplace enclosures, and other tiled areas in a home.
These tiles, named for the Spanish city of Talavera de la Reina, owe their unique appearance to the marriage of Spanish pottery making and Arabic influence in ninth century Spanish art and design. Spanish potters brought the techniques for making Talavera tiles with them when they immigrated to Puebla, Mexico, during the sixteenth century. For ages, these tiles were a sign of wealth and prestige– prosperous families would decorate their houses in them. By the eighteenth century, Mexican Talavera tile factories had sprung up all over the country in order to keep up wit the demand for more of these greatly sought-after painted clay tiles.
Each Talavera tile is a subtly unique creation, with a personality of its own. Traditional designs can range from simple, one-colored tiles, to abstract designs using only a few colors, to ornate designs with naturalistic themes featuring birds, fish, flowers, leaves, or produce. Some modern Mexican Talavera tiles are given celestial themes, or are painted with images of ‘La Catrina’ from ‘Dia de los Muertos’ Traditionally, these tiles can be hand painted in bold jewel tones, including a variety of stunning blues, oranges, reds, greens, and yellows. Some are colored all over, while others may feature their eye-catching designs on a white or cream glaze background.
While individual, ornate Talavera tiles make beautiful and interesting accent pieces in an otherwise-plain tiled surround or backsplash, mural Talavera tiles are ideally suited for turning an ordinary wall into an extraordinary and unique work of art. Other objects, like sinks, are also available in the same style and materials as the mural Talavera tiles themselves.
Regardless of one’s decorating aesthetic or color scheme, there are Talavera tiles that can enhance it. These artistic creations can go anywhere tiles or other ceramics can go, and brighten up a plain space with their bright, unexpected beauty.
