The essential role of table lamps...

The humble table lamp, often forgotten about or seen as a mere decorative item, is actually a useful lighting instrument:

• Table lamps allow for a quick and convenient way to add ambient or task lighting.
• Some table lamps have adjustable arms allowing users to precisely direct light.
• Soft lighting from table lamps adds a layer of ambient light that offsets the harshness of recessed lighting.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, strategically placed table lamps solve common lighting challenges by balancing intense overhead lights, thereby reducing eye strain and improving overall lighting dynamics in any space.

Incorporate table lamps into your lighting design to achieve a harmonious blend of form and function, proving that great things often come in small packages.

5 lighting design tips for a modern cabin retreat...

For contemporary mountain cabins and vacation homes embracing grand panoramic views, lighting plays a vital role in amplifying that rejuvenating backcountry ambiance:

• Large windows letting lots of natural daylight in
• Choose warm lighting to really get settled and comfortable in the evening
• Rustic yet refined fixtures with textured metalwork and wooden accents
• Adding natural elements like fireplaces indoors and gas light fixtures outdoors
• Showpiece light fixtures like chandeliers that match the design and setting

Anything too ornate or overly embellished may feel inappropriate amid surroundings.

Finding that balance between naturally organic and modern minimalist? That's where seasoned lighting designers differentiate breathtaking retreats from mere vacation rentals.

3 lighting tips for a high-end coastal residence or resort:

For luxury residences and resorts embracing stylish seaside flair, lighting amplifies that breezy island ambiance if selected properly:

• Select fixtures and optics which enhance, not detract from the natural setting
• Airy, open designs should avoid many dropped or hanging light fixtures
• Warm white and amber tones create a relaxing atmosphere and comfortable setting

Clunky, oversized fixtures clash against casual indoor-outdoor coastal living spaces. And anything too ornate or formal feels stuffy in a laid-back beach house environment.

How do you improve an already impressive penthouse with a view?

When crafting lighting for an exquisite penthouse with wraparound water views and double-height expanses, only the most elevated lighting design will do. Key lighting elements include:

• Jaw-dropping sculptural centerpiece chandeliers as glittering crowns
• Discreet trimless recessed lighting preserving clean, minimalist planes
• Layers of adjustable accent beams spotlighting architectural statements

Anything less than a curated composition aligning with the home's world-class pedigree simply falls flat.

Ordinary fixtures from the local big box store fail to achieve luxury style and ambiance. Uninspired utilitarian lighting cheapens lavish, one-of-a-kind living spaces meant to exude glamour and opulence at every turn.

Let's create a masterful lighting plan together!

Enjoy your views without distracting lighting...

In luxury residences where stunning views are the heart of the design, the lighting strategy should be intentionally minimal to ensure nothing detracts from the beauty outside your windows.

• Utilize cove lighting to softly illuminate without glare.
• Choose trimless fixtures for a flawless integration with architectural elements.
• Add enough ambient lighting without overpowering the space or creating glare.

Lighting shouldn't compete with your home's stunning views; it should facilitate a seamless connection between interior and the exterior.

Diminish visual distractions and let nature's beauty steal the show. Designing with respect to the external environment allows for a harmonious living experience.

Lighting should complement architecture – not be a distraction.

For estates and properties with breathtaking natural scenery or embodying architectural grandeur, exterior and interior lighting demands a refined, minimalist approach:

• Discreet light fixtures with glare-free optics meld into backgrounds seamlessly
• Specific beam spreads and optics to visually enhance space and textures
• Automated smart controls to adjust with time of day and weather conditions

Bold, attention-grabbing lighting would only detract from the inherent beauty and premium pedigree these world-class settings already command. Curated, artful integration allows the surroundings to shine.

Whether a sleek modern waterfront residence or iconic commercial showpiece designed by the worlds leading architects, over-lighting with hot spots and harsh sources ruins delicate spatial compositions. Fixtures become the unintended focal point rather than receding into supportive roles.

For luxury properties in awe-inspiring locations or boasting head-turning architecture, delivering proper illumination requires incredible restraint.

High ceilings and walls of glass dominating your space? Lighting is especially important!

With soaring vertical dimensions and natural light via glazing, it's easy for even the most breathtaking modern residences to feel somber and dim if lighting is an afterthought.

Thoughtful illumination breathes life into grand rooms while amplifying wow-factor architectural details.

For today's elevated contemporary homes brimming with scale and style, lighting design isn't a discretionary budget line – it's a crucial investment defining how the entire experience of a space resonates.

A luxury space needs at least one showpiece light fixture.

In lavish interiors demanding an undeniable "wow" factor, a breathtaking signature light fixture serves as the focal point drawing all eyes.

These visual masterpieces elevate any upscale room to a whole new level through:

• Large (even massive) sculptural scale and head-turning proportions
• Exquisite, high-quality materials like crystal, carved glass, metalwork or woodwork
• Visually stunning motion (physical or visual) such as rings or tubular structures
• Technology integration enabling color-tuning, programmable effects with smart controls
• Craftsmanship, especially hand worked, of the highest skill to highlight the material

A space missing such a lighting anchor piece loses a prime opportunity to create drama and intrigue. Extraordinary environments deserve an equally extraordinary luminous art piece.

Our Story

Apogee House specializes in architectural lighting for residential and commercial projects. We make lighting easy from start to finish.

Our approach is simple: we work hands on with architects, interior designers, contractors, and home owners to identify a need and find creative solutions to achieve the desired result. We are a small team so we value quality over quantity, so we will take on only a handful of projects at a time to offer the absolute best customer service our clients have come to expect from us.

Apogee House was created by Tony Carrera. Tony has been involved in design from an early age. He first started designing and developing websites in his teenage years and later worked on graphic design for several clients. In late 2005, he began his career in architectural lighting design. He spent many years paying his dues but eventually started designing lighting layouts for high-end custom homes and outdoor spaces. Much of his time was spent researching, designing and programming complex lighting and LED systems. He has worked on many luxury and budget-conscious projects for both residential and commercial applications. His work has been mainly in the South Florida area but has also worked on projects throughout the United States, South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
