In the mid-2000s, I still remember arriving into Everglades City before sunrise, rushing to launch our skiff into the Barron River for our annual multi-day fishing excursion through Everglades National Park. Amid the excitement and pre-trip chaos, I found myself crossing the street for a closer look at a mysterious, temple-like building across from the storied Rod & Gun Club.
Across its façade were the words: BANK OF EVERGLADES.
20 or so years later the building is being restored after falling into disrepair.
This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of visiting Patty Huff, President of the Everglades Society for Historic Preservation. We spoke in depth about the Bank of Everglades restoration project and the remarkable progress being made.
The organization has already completed critical foundation repairs and structural reinforcement. With above-ground restoration finally underway, the project includes rehabilitation of the historic structure along with a modest rear addition to provide accessible entry.
They are not simply saving the Bank of Everglades, they are restoring its civic presence and re establishing its role in the life of the town.
