That’s one of the special things about Sparrow Plein Air Festival. You might be quietly focused on your own work, then look up and realize there are artists all around you doing the same thing, each seeing the scene in their own way.

It’s not about everyone making the same kind of painting. It’s about getting outside, looking closely, and making art in community.

The festival countdown is on!

Sparrow Plein Air Festival is happening this week, June 12–14, and we can’t wait to see artists painting throughout Middlebury.

You don’t have to be a pro. You don’t need to make a perfect painting. Bring a sketchbook, watercolors, oils, pencils, gouache, pastels, or whatever portable supplies you love, and come make art outside with us.

Artist registration has been extended, and Friday workshop spots are still available.

This is exactly the spirit of Sparrow Plein Air Festival.

It’s about feeling the wind on your face, hearing the birds and bugs, noticing the river, the light, the movement of town, and letting the painting become an impression of the experience.

We’ve extended the festival ticket registration, so you can still paint the town with us! Whether you’re brand new to working outdoors or you’ve been doing it for years, you’re invited to a weekend of making art outdoors Middlebury, June 12-14.

Sketching outdoors doesn’t have to be complicated. A few simple supplies, a comfortable spot to sit, and a willingness to slow down and observe is really all you need.

Whether you’re filling pages with detailed drawings or just doodling the shapes and colors around you, plein air sketching is about being present with the moment.

Pack light, stay curious, and don’t worry about making it perfect. The best part is simply showing up and creating alongside community. 🌿

Spend a June afternoon painting flowers in the gardens at Swift House Inn!

Plein Air Petal Portraits with Annelein Beukenkamp is a 3-hour watercolor workshop designed to help you loosen up, explore color, and build confidence painting from fresh garden inspiration.

will guide participants through approachable watercolor techniques, including color, negative painting, and elements of design, with time for demonstration and individual attention.

With this stretch of summer weather, it is getting easy to picture artists painting along the river, by the falls, and in the gardens. Artists stationed throughout Middlebury, working in their own way, but all part of the same creative moment. That is what makes Sparrow Plein Air Festival feel different from painting outside on your own.
