So tonight I went rogue in the kitchen 🇮🇹🍽️

I tried making a Northern Italian–style lasagna with besciamella. The recipe said no basil… but honestly, who makes lasagna without fresh basil? That felt illegal, so I added it anyway. Also snuck in a little Italian sausage, because restraint is overrated.

Did it come out looking elegant and magazine-worthy? Absolutely not. It’s a bit of a beautiful disaster. But… it tastes way better than it looks, so I’ll take that win.

The whole reason I tried this was because one of those YouTube food hushand and wife said he didn’t like Sicilian lasagna with ricotta. I had to see what the fuss was about.

Final verdict: Northern Italian lasagna is good… but I still stand by Southern Italian and Sicilian lasagna being way better. Ricotta forever. 🇮🇹❤️

One thing people completely miss around the holidays is this obsession with everything being perfect. In reality, the memories that actually stick are the chaos. The crazy family members, the ridiculous conversations, the awkward moments that make everyone freeze for half a second. That’s the stuff you remember years later.

Nobody sits around reminiscing about how straight the tablecloth was. You remember who said something out of pocket, who showed up late, who had one drink too many, and who made everyone laugh when they absolutely shouldn’t have.

Life isn’t meant to be perfect, and neither are the people in it. So maybe loosen up, pull the pole out, and enjoy the moment a little more. Because one day, all this mess becomes the memory you wish you could relive.

It amazes me how often we forget how lucky we are to live in New England. I laugh when people talk about how beautiful Hallmark movies are and say they wish life was like that. Meanwhile… look around. We live in those towns.

The lights, the old streets, the snow-covered houses, the quiet nights. It’s all right here. Yet people will say, “Look at all the Christmas lights,” and never drive around at night. They’ll talk about how pretty the snow is but won’t leave the house during a storm. They wait until the sidewalks, driveways, and roads are cleared, everything melts, and then they go out.

Sometimes you don’t need a movie to escape into. You just need to step outside and actually experience where you live.

Plan my garden better

It’s funny how life works. As kids, we don’t think twice about those afternoons spent in the kitchen with our grandparents. But as adults, you’d give just about anything to go back—even for just a minute. To stand beside your grandmother, watching her hands move with ease as she cooked. To taste the food exactly the way she made it, not just the way you’ve tried to recreate it. To smell those familiar aromas that somehow made the whole house feel like love. Those are the little moments you don’t realize are treasures until all you have left are the memories—and the recipes you keep alive today.

One thing I’ve found is that when your time with friends and family is limited, purposeful cooking in the kitchen is a perfect way to connect. It’s a space to talk, share stories, enjoy company… and multitask your pleasure at the same time. Growing up with one of my grandmothers being Sicilian...

Well… on the other hand 🤦‍♂️ when your doctor tells you to lower your blood pressure and you’re shocked because you think you eat healthy—then you scroll through your phone and see all the food you’ve cooked 😂🍔🍕🍩.

Sometimes the photos tell the truth we don’t want to admit lol.

It’s funny—when you finally decide to scroll through the 3,000 photos on your phone, it’s the simplest things that bring back the happiest memories. 🌱

Not the 80 failed attempts in the garden 😂… but that one small success when something actually grew. Those are the moments that stick.

Sometimes we get so caught up in the day-to-day rat race that we forget to stop and appreciate where we are—and where we’ve come from.

I know these photos don’t do the beauty justice, but moments like this make you really appreciate the simplicity of East Haddam—the swing bridge, the opera house, the Gelston House, and the quiet charm that surrounds it.

When we lived there, it often felt too quiet and too far from everything. But now, with the kids grown, I find myself missing that simplicity more than ever.

I feel truly blessed to still spend time there each week—it’s a reminder to slow down and enjoy the beauty around us.
