Carpets combining fibers are worse for stains.

That may seem counterintuitive. Why wouldn't a polyester and wool blend be better for stain performance than wool alone?

The answer is that different cleaning methods are optimized (generally) for just one fiber type. With a blended fiber, your cleaning options are more limited, since you don't want to compromise ANY of the included fibers.

So wool polyester blends may cost less than 100% wool carpets. That's a reason to choose them for your home. But for stains, we recommend choosing a 100% synthetic carpet or a 100% wool carpet rather than a mix of the two.

One choice makes wood look and perform better.

Run wood flooring planks the long way. Wood planks expand more across their width, so running them the long way means less opportunity for movement in the floor. And we find it looks better that way too.

So remember our simple rule: run wood the long way.

Why settle for dull carpet colors?

New Dawn from Engineered Floors comes in subtle greens and blues. These looks have been hard to find in solution-dyed fibers, which have often seemed muted.

Why choose solution-dyed carpet? The color goes all the way through the fiber, making it more resistant to stains and fading.

Low spots mean gaps, squeaks, or early failure.

Most of the time self-leveler solves it. You may not even need the whole subfloor covered, just the low spots.

Big box stores often skip this step. We make sure your subfloor is firm and flat so your vinyl plank lasts for years.

Tennis balls with water and vinegar for stains?

If you love your hardwood but it has a mark, we have a tennis ball tip that will serve you well. The National Wood Flooring Association recommends dabbing a 10-to-1 mix of water and vinegar (or a little mineral oil) onto the tennis ball, then rubbing out the spot.

The ball provides the right amount of pressure to remove the stain without damaging the grain. Just remember to test a small spot first.
