Finally an article with semi-realistic costs attached to it. All of these are worthwhile projects if you're doing them for yourself to enjoy and live comfortably. But for resale purposes talk to an experienced contractor and designer to identify the "bang for your buck" and "obvious repair" items to tackle.

Here's a tip for changing the atmosphere and feel of your entire home without spending the nest egg. This idea also will help sell if you're selling or just make you feel better about your environment. And it's very subtle.
Change your doors. If you're in a house that has hollow doors and average hinges and hardware, change them all to solid wood or solid MDF doors that have a real weight to them.
There's a very secure and good feeling about pulling a solid door closed when you're used to hollow ones.
Simple, solid doors can be purchased and installed affordably with good hinges and nice feeling, solid k***s or handles. You can also add additional header mouldings like in the photo on the doors to the major areas of the home if you architecture allows for it.

Be sure to have your contractor donate/recycle your old doors.
