A fire-resistant home designed to belong to its site: dark board and batten siding that recedes into the oak woodland by day, and opens fully to the landscape by night. The covered outdoor living area, stone fireplace, and pool extend the interior outward, blurring the boundary between inside and outside.

One of the defining moves throughout this Mill Valley cabin is the way skylights transition directly into vertical glazing, pulling light down the wall, connecting the ceiling plane to the garden and tree canopy beyond, and making every room feel larger than its footprint suggests.

The existing roofline was maintained and reconstructed rather than altered. Hemlock was selected for walls and ceilings throughout the main spaces, its color and grain complementary to the white oak floors and cabinetry, reinforcing the cabin character while keeping the interior warm and current. The result reads as a single, cohesive material envelope rather than a collection of finishes.

The open plan at our Sycamore Park cottage centers on a highly functional kitchen designed for gathering, with walnut-toned cabinetry by and a calm, graphic tile field that keeps the backdrop quiet and durable. Adjacent dining stays equally straightforward, with clean lines, a single pendant, and wide openings to the exterior.

RPA helped shift this space at from dark, fully paneled formality to a lighter, more contemporary reception experience, one that still respects the room’s classic proportions.

The update leans on restraint: brighter wall finishes, cleaner detailing, and a calmer backdrop that lets the fireplace, arched openings, and beamed ceiling read with more clarity, while improving how the room feels for guests from first arrival to last pour.

A Tudor cottage kitchen, redesigned to suit modern living, features an 18-foot marble-topped island and a minimalist material palette that combines warmth with simplicity. Salvaged steel windows bring in natural light and views, while oak cabinetry and a continuous marble backsplash create a calm, durable space ready for daily use.

At this Belvedere waterfront house, the gate opens onto a courtyard that frames what lies beyond: a glimpse of the Bay through the living space, with the house’s two masses defining the threshold on either side. The standing-seam metal roof and Resysta weather screen, fabricated from rice husks, long used in Asia for boat decks, meet the site's fireproof and ember-resistant material requirements while aging naturally in the salt air. A living roof caps the garage below.

Kengo Kuma goes curvy.

RPA principal Heidi Richardson recently visited Tokyo, and we couldn't help but share a few images from her trip, starting with this one.

MoN Takanawa, the Museum of Narratives at Takanawa Gateway City, opened just last month and is already one of the year's more talked-about buildings.

Kuma's signature material language is all here: warm timber fins, layered greenery, and a facade that reads differently at every hour of the day. But what stops you in your tracks is the form itself, a spiraling stack of horizontal planes that feels less like a building placed on a site and more like something that grew from it. In a district otherwise dominated by glass towers, it earns its place.

An economy of small design interventions can be powerful. The palette for the renovation of the Forever Family Cottage is decidedly bright and fresh. On the main level, a white and cream color combo pairs with flaxen-toned wood elements. Bleached-out oak floorboards meet dusky grey stone. All is tempered with natural woven window treatments. Upstairs, the bathrooms were refinished with a similar light, airy touch, contrasted by crisp black hardware.

Elevation to reality. ✨
For our , the elevations reflect a set of strict constraints - a tight lot, protected redwoods, and a wildfire interface context - and transform them into a disciplined design: stacked volumes, deep overhangs, and openings positioned for daylight and borrowed views. Constructed with fire-resistant exterior materials and deliberately kept compact at 1,600 SF, the house weaves between tree trunks, with decks that expand the interior space while remaining light on the site.
