This is the state of affairs in my April garden.
Some of these volunteered and many of them are planted from seed or are perennials from the previous season.
Plant now: cold-tolerant starts and seeds:
Buy now as plants or starts.
These are good early-season choices if you find them as transplants or divisions:
chives
thyme
oregano
sage
lavender
parsley starts
hardy lettuce starts
onion starts or bunching onions
broccoli, cabbage, or kale starts if you want more than herbs in the bed
Sow now from seed
These are reliable cold-tolerant or cool-season seed choices:
peas
spinach
radishes
turnips
carrots
beets
lettuce
Swiss chard
parsley
dill
cilantro
bunching onions or onion seed sets where available.
Basic early-spring rule
Plant these as soon as the soil is workable and not waterlogged. Keep seed beds evenly moist until germination. Re-seed quick crops like radishes, lettuce, and spinach every couple of weeks if you want a longer harvest window.
Several crops such as radish, carrot, and Swiss chard can be planted in succession beyond the first planting date.
