Ikat is a dyeing technique used to pattern textiles that uses resist dyeing on the yarns prior to dyeing and weaving the fabric. The resist is formed by binding individual yarns or bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping applied to produce a desired pattern. A characteristic of ikat textiles is a "blurriness" to the design. That blurriness is the result of the challenge the weaver has in aligning the dyed yarns. Ikat is not a product from one particular place but can be found everywhere from India to Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Japan, Africa and Latin America.

Églomisé refers to the process of applying both a design and gilding onto the rear face of glass to produce a mirror finish. The name was derived from the 18th-century French decorator and art-dealer Jean-Baptiste Glomy (1711–1786), who was responsible for its revival. The technique of back-painting glass actually dates back to pre-Roman eras. One of the key historical periods of this art was in Italy during the 13th to 16th centuries. Small panels of glass with designs formed by engraved gilding were applied to reliquaries and portable altars. The technique has also been used throughout Europe since the 15th century, making its presence in paintings, furniture, drinking glasses and jewellery. Additionally, during the Ch’ien-lung period (Ch’ing Dynasty, 1644-1912) Églomisé art was produced for western export trade. In modern times it is often seen in the form of decorative panels of mirrors, clock faces, and in window signs. Image credit: Miriam Elner's work for our client's coffee table top.
