This week is Fire Prevention Week. As fascinating and tragic as the Great Chicago Fire was, it lead to important education and safety measures that have undoubtedly saved hundreds of lives.

Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire, which started on October 8, 1871. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week in 1925, making it the longest-running public health observance in the United States to educate people on fire safety and honor the victims of that devastating blaze.

The Great Chicago Fire caused widespread destruction, killing over 250 people and leaving 100,000 homeless.
