The Department of Interior Design offers students a broad background in interior elements, materials, sources, and practical experience in the business of interior design. The department trains students to create functional, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing residential and commercial interior environments and is accredited by The Council for Interior Design Accreditation (formerly FIDER).

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT:

Meet Zamarion Bender, a senior interior design student that will officially graduate this upcoming August! Zamarion will complete his internship at Business Interiors in Birmingham, Alabama this summer in order to meet the requirements to graduate in the fall. He is most excited to learn about furniture decor and gain a learning experience that is different from the past four years at Mississippi State.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT:

Meet Alexis Guidry, a senior interior design student that will officially graduate this upcoming August! Alexis will complete her internship at Eley Guild Hardy (EGH) in Biloxi, Mississippi this summer. She is excited to learn as much as she can outside of the classroom and what the process is like in the real world.

One valuable lesson she has learned at MSU is that procrastination is not an option and time management is key. Her favorite part of her senior exhibition was being able to do it together with all of her peers from the past 4 years. After her internship, she hopes to feel comfortable and confident in her work.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT:

Meet Jackelyn Garcia, a senior interior design student that will officially graduate this upcoming August! Jackelyn will complete her internship this summer in order to meet the requirements to graduate in the fall. She is excited to use the knowledge she has learned at MSU into a real life project.

Over the past 4 years, Jackelyn has learned many valuable lessons - such as being open to everyone because everyone has something to give and you will be taught something you didn’t know before. Additionally, she advises others not to compare themselves to other people. One of her favorite product designs involves being able to show her culture through design and celebrating her latin heritage. She enjoys being able to present her project to her family.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT:

Meet Bethany Chesteen, a senior interior design student that will officially graduate this upcoming August! She is interning with KPS Group Inc. in Birmingham, Alabama this summer. She is excited to work in a collaborative environment and work on multiple different sectors of interior design outside of residential design. Specifically, she hopes to get her hands on some hospitality projects along with education and healthcare projects.

One valuable lesson she has learned at MSU is to take everything one day at a time and trust God for he has everything planned out. After her internship wraps up, Bethany will continue to work in the interior design industry and find more exciting opportunities in Birmingham!

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT:

Meet Caroline Burroughs, a senior interior design student that graduated May of 2026. Caroline interned with Carrot Top Designs last summer. At her internship, she was able to work in a detached guest house and pool house setting on her own. There, she learned a lot of hands-on experience and confirmed that she does want to do residential full-time.

One valuable lesson Caroline has learned at MSU is to take what is taught in class seriously because they are preparing you for the real world whether you realize it or not. Especially when it comes to knowing the right material to use and what is appropriate for each client and their specific needs. She will continue to work in a residential firm and will be specializing in kitchens and baths as a design assistant starting this month!

Meet Anna Alger, a senior Interior design that graduated May of 2026. Anna is interning with HASTINGS Architecture in Nashville this summer! She is excited to gain experience in commercial design and hopes to learn new things and attain fresh insights. Additionally, Anna is excited to meet and design projects with new people.

One valuable lesson she has learned at MSU is to never underestimate your work and what you know. She hopes to work more on commercial projects after her internship.

Interior design students researched nationally award-winning design projects and identified the key principles and elements that made them successful. Then, each group created an abstract 6” x 6” cube that displays those elements through their own design interpretation. This project connects research, creativity, and hands-on learning in the studio!
