A Public Service Announcement from our family to yours: If you have had any strong reactions to a bee sting, don't ignore them. 17 years ago today, we almost lost our son Kevin to a sting. He went into anaphylactic shock, and the doctor said if hadn't been so young (he was 20) and healthy, he would not have survived. He'd been stung a few weeks prior, and his reaction was stronger than normal, but not enough that we realized it was dangerous. Then came the one that almost killed him.
Get the bee venom shots. We're so thankful that they have worked for Kevin. There are no guarantees of course, but he has been stung a few times since then (including twice this fall). And each time, he's been ok. Extremely nervous, and tired. but ok. Without the shots, it's very likely he would not have survived them.
Carry an Epi-Pen. It's a nuisance, but vital. It's what saved Kevin when the paramedics got to him. He always carries one with him now.
Take it from us, a strong reaction is a warning. Heart racing, shortness of breath... those were Kevin's warning signs. We've heard for others it was swelling or hives etc.
The allergist who treated Kevin said everyone has a tolerance level, and once you reach it, you are in danger. Thankfully, there is help available.

Coming up the next 2 weekends at our son’s farm: their Wild Apple Festival. Today, the kids helped us with Operation Scarecrow. 😃 These guys will be part of several photo ops. Plus, so many pumpkins! Make your own flower bouquet in their U-Pick field. A scavenger hunt in the wild apple orchard! Kids games including a fun one they call apple fishing. 😃😃 We will have some of our fall crafts there. Let me tell you, a juice extractor is the way to go!! We picked some of our Concord grapes tonight, and ran them through the extractor. Easy, peasy! I don’t have the patience (or desire) to do the whole cooking & straining through cheesecloth thing, but this….this I can do! 😜 Full disclosure, I don’t own an extractor, we borrow our daughter-in-laws.
