Sunkota Ridge Baskets-Christmas and “Seng” Basket! The Christmas “Seng” basket depicts the times late fall until frost people of the Appalachian would dig ginseng to provide income for Christmas. It could be quite lucrative unless you were digging in the park, even worse if you were to sneak on someone else’s property. You would fair better by a Park Ranger than you would trespassing! Land owners took/take it very serious! The Christmas and “Seng” Basket can be used many ways with your Christmas decor! Loaded with big pine cones, Christmas arrangement on a table or beside a fireplace, giving as a gift full of goodies or placed with led lights to give a soft evening glow while you listen to Christmas music! Why Sunkota Ridge Baskets? Sunkota Ridge Baskets are not only versatile baskets for usage but also depicting the heritage and places of Appalachain People from the Great Smoky Mountains, the Appalachian and the Blue Ridge Mountains! Strong, resilient people, who are proud of their heritage, their roots, their communities!
One of my all time favorite books is, “These Storied Mountains” by John Parris. He worked for a newspaper many years ago in Waynesville, NC and he took pieces he had written and added more stories to it of people and their stories that lived backcountry all over Western North Carolina. The stories always fascinated me. From midwives, pastors, doctors etc who traveled in terrible weather conditions from creek to creek assisting people in need at any given time. The old woman that knew how to build the best drawing fireplaces and she would go and build people’s fireplaces until she was up in age! Amazingly hardworking people that would walk miles and miles to help someone, anyone!
Why Sunkota Ridge Baskets? I handweave every basket with gratitude for the mountains that inspire me, the traditions that guide me and the simple moments that remind us what truly matters and to pause! To stop and appreciate the beauty of what nature offers! Our world is so busy and has made people feel guilty if they stop and take time to sit by a creek, stroll on a trail and look for God’s hidden treasures, sit by a fire and lose your thoughts for just a while! My sisters and I were so blessed our parents instilled this in us and love the simple moments! Recharge our batteries for whatever is going on in our lives.
Why Sunkota Ridge Baskets? It doesn’t matter where you are or if you are familiar with the names of places and things I give each basket, it doesn’t matter if it is the Smokies, the Appalachian Trail or Blue Ridge Mountains! The Sunkota Ridge Baskets are a piece of nature that is found in any of these areas. It is a piece of art that doesn’t simply hold the things we gather……..It holds the moments we never want to forget❤️
