🔥 Fire Damage Restoration — Part 3: Veneer Repairs

For the larger loose sections, good old-fashioned wood glue and clamps was all I needed to get everything secured back down.

For areas where veneer is lifting in the middle of a table or edges, I used a thin CA glue. Because it’s so thin, it can wick down into those tight spaces where getting traditional wood glue underneath the veneer would be difficult. A quick spray of accelerator sets it almost instantly and lets me keep moving.

Making sure everything is solid, secure, and ready for what comes next.

Sometimes restoration is less about replacing what’s damaged and more about figuring out the best way to save what’s already there. 🪵

Stay tune for part 3.5 with more veneer repairs.

Part 2.5 — because apparently stripping deserves more than one episode. 😂

Flat surfaces are one thing, but turned legs, curves, carvings and all those little details can make removing an old finish a whole different game.

One technique I use is acetone-soaked rags. I saturate the fabric with acetone, wrap it around the area and let it sit for about 5 minutes, making sure it stays wet. This gives the solvent time to soften and break down the old finish before I go back in and scrub it away.

On finishes like nitrocellulose lacquer, acetone can break the finish down surprisingly quickly—making it much easier to get into those detailed areas without aggressively sanding away the character of the piece.

A little patience, a little chemistry, and eventually we’re back to clean, fresh wood and ready for the next step. 🙌
