In June 1971 DC Comics introduced a new character in “House of Secrets issue #92 - the Swamp Thing. Shortly afterward the marsh creature was awarded his own series. Blending classic horror and science fiction the series found a dedicated fan base. A couple of awful movies and a mini series that was met with less than favorable reviews failed to deliver the same spark as this original comic and the later series did. Bernie Wrightson’s art was perfect for this book giving it a somewhat gothic feel. Imaginative storytelling added to this book’s appeal and 55 years later it is still one of the Bronze Age most sought after comics. This and other books of the early 1970’s can be found at Coast to Coast Antiques Gallery in Myrtle Beach, SC

You either love them or hate them; there’s no middle ground. Lladro began producing porcelain items in 1953 in Almàssera, Spain. Founded by three brothers - Juan, José, and Vicente Lladro - the brand grew from a small, family-owned ceramic workshop into a world renowned porcelain brand. Their distinct toned pastel colors and single-firing method coupled with highly detail and artistic designs set Lladro apart from all others except maybe NAO which happens to be a sister company. I affectionately call NAO Baby Lladro because the artist they use often go through a training period there before the are employed by Lladro. NAO figures do not command the same price as Lladro pieces do. These Lladros and others can be found at Coast to Coast Antiques Gallery in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Stomach Flu / Food Poisoning
Some of the posters on Yelp decided to pay me a couple of unfavorable reviews because I was closed yesterday and today. Well folks, hitting me at 12:00AM Friday I succumbed to this nasty, really nasty, ailment. Two nights without sleep running to the bathroom, both ends by the way, every 15 minutes Friday and finally easing up around 3:00 this afternoon prevented me from opening. Nothing to eat, I’m finally on soda crackers and Gatorade - I’ve lost 12 pounds. My neighbor was kind enought to post a sign on the door for me that I’d be closed. Seems like another review of simular ilk happened as my father laid dying in the hospital and yes, I closed then too. Kindly, before you post something negative on social media find out why; there’s usually a good reason.

Fabulous Fenton Glass:

With a respectable history Fenton Glass created a wide variety of quality products for over a century (1905-2011). From its humble beginnings in Ohio Fenton moved to West Virginia. Innovative original pieces were produced that rivaled some of the finest companies in the world and Fenton established itself as a leading manufacturer.

In the 1970s Fenton like many of its peers fell on hard times. George Fenton made a bold decision to find a new market and reacquaint Fenton Glass to a new generation. He loaded up his station wagon and drove to Florida. He set up a table of his company’s pieces and became one of the first sellers on the newly formed QVC. The gamble worked Fenton attracted a new generation of collectors.

I once had a customer tell me that he didn’t collect anything - he couldn’t see why his wife spent good money on glass. She had talked him into taking a tour of Fenton Glassworks with her. He was reluctant, he really didn’t want to go but it was for her so he did. He thought he’d be board. He wasn’t. He said listening to the guide and observing the skilled craftsmen go about their trade fascinating. He said he came out of the tour with respect. Going in he’d considered the glassware overpriced but coming out he wondered how they could sell their goods for such an affordable price.

All good things end and Fenton closed its doors in 2011. Coast to Coast Antiques Gallery recently purchased a Fabulous Fenton Glass collection with mire than 800 individual pieces, the majority artist signed pieces, that we’ll be offering over the next several months. Having priced and displayed 200 pieces these are the first to be offered. We are open 10-4 Wednesday-Saturday in Myrtle Beach, SC.
