Today is Interior Design & Construction Managements "Make a Difference Charrette". It starts at 1:00 in room McKibben's Education auditorium 131.
CHARRETTE 2021
Can interior design & construction management students use creativity to make daily existence better for human beings, other living things or the earth?
The IDEC proposed years ago to spread an idea inspired by Bryan Bell, founder of Design Corps, a non-profit group dedicated to world betterment through design. The idea is simple, but potentially profound.
1. Have your interior design & construction management students find a real-life problem that could be made better through a design, built of some kind.
2. Have them create and install a small, meaningful design solution, either temporary or permanent.
3. Then have students observe what happens when people encounter and use their environmental idea.
An example:
ID & CM student noticed that visitors entering the department offices at his school had no logical place to put their dripping umbrellas on frequent rainy days. They fashioned a simple holder that would allow the umbrellas to dry in their extended position, and in the process created a changing sculptural piece that enhanced the foyer. (Of course, they got prior approval)
Example 2: Students notice that there was a bench at the bus stop and only one person sat at it. So, the students created a rail and placed in the center. Then they noticed two people were utilizing the bench. (they got prior approval from the city)
To keep the project small and meaningful, we will introduce the project, Friday Sept. 17th then give the student teams 4-6 hours to conceive and one week to execute the project. Any installations should receive approval from the appropriate authorities (office, community, etc.)
Please note projects must be safe and conform to local codes and other restrictions. Responsibility for projects rests with the sponsoring institution.
A significant part of the project should occur (such as installation) on or before Sept. 22, 2021. To complete the project, students will upload document design idea with photographs and a one-page description using the template below.
After your work has been reviewed, our sponsor Randy Johnson with Johnson’s furniture and a team of advisors will review. One team will be selected to receive a $200 cash prize.
