How do you mix an orange that glows? Two colors: Cadmium Red and Lemon Yellow.

More lemon on the side facing the light. More red as it turns away. For the shadow side of the fruit I layered a little Ultramarine into the orange, and the shadow underneath is Ultramarine and Alizarin with a touch of Cadmium Red. The stem is Lemon Yellow and Ultramarine.

Mixing your own orange instead of using one straight from a tube keeps the whole painting related. Every color here comes from the same few tubes, so nothing fights.

Clementine season is almost here, my favorite bridge from pumpkins into winter.

You've been booed. 👻

A Boo basket is October's version of a secret Santa. Leave a little bag of treats on a neighbor's porch, knock, and run. Then they pass it on.

A set of these ghost bookmarks slips right in. Four friendly ghosts, printed on heavy cotton rag paper and cut by hand in my Napa studio. Nobody gets a sugar crash.

They also work for the Teal Pumpkin Project, if you hand out non-food treats for kids with food allergies. Bookmarks are right on FARE's own list of ideas.

Four pumpkin patches, one page.

These are color studies. Quick, loose, and not precious at all. It's where I work out which oranges, which greens, and how much blue the shadows need, before anything goes on the final. Color studies make a plan to arrive at the finished piece.

If you've been stuck on starting, try a color study first. It's a sketch. It doesn't have to be exact.

In Napa, fall color arrives late. The vineyards turn after harvest, gold first, then rust and red, usually around the end of October.

The warm earth tones of autumn in burnt sienna, ochre, and new gamboge bring autumn indoors without committing a whole room to them.

Hang it in October. Leave it up through Thanksgiving.

A few simple colors, a simple sketch (or download the transfer drawing), a lightly wet-in-wet painting and you will have a painted Sea Star.

Candle season is here. A well-used pewter chamberstick, painted start to finish.

A forest green beeswax taper that has clearly been burned before. Black wick, uneven height, drips down the side. A brand new candle would have been much less interesting.

Three colors: Hooker's Green, Payne's Gray, and a Daniel Smith Iridescent Antique Silver for a little shimmer on the pewter. Use what you have and what works for you.

Slow, cozy evenings are the mood of the season. A small painting of a real, used object says that better than anything staged.

Which ghost are you? 👻
