We removed a wall, added an island and went with a lighter color pallete with warmer wood tones.

For the first of our flooring tidbit series, let’s take a moment to talk about hardwood floors.

Solid or engineered, hardwood is an ever enduring flooring choice that brings a timeless warmth and beauty. With up to fifty species, endless stain options to choose from different layout patterns and varieties of inlays, hardwood works for any design style. Although higher maintenance, hardwood can be sanded and refinished many times, and can last decades or even centuries.

Turning a basement into a living space always has its challenges. This particular project not only had an odd floorplan to start, it also had multi-level ceiling heights and many unmovable support beams to work around.

We wanted to give as much height as we could where we could. One way we did this was creating a multi-height cabinet wall as a centerpiece in the kitchen. This draws your eyes up, making the space feel taller, more open, and less…basement.

There are seven types of bathroom lighting:

1.) ℂ𝕖𝕚𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕃𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤 are generally located in the center of the bathroom & provide overall lighting to the bathroom

2.) 𝕎𝕒𝕝𝕝 𝕊𝕔𝕠𝕟𝕔𝕖 𝕃𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤 are mounted in pairs, one on each side of the mirror and typically above the bathroom sink. They provide an excellent source of illumination because they add faint shadows to the face.

3.) 𝕍𝕒𝕟𝕚𝕥𝕪 𝕃𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤 are typically a bank of two or more lights located directly above the bathroom mirror. Due to their position above the bathroom vanity or counter, bathroom vanity lights are good at illuminating the countertop and sink.

4.) ℂ𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕕𝕖𝕝𝕚𝕖𝕣𝕤 are showy and fun and always fantastic statement. Your bathroom ceiling needs to be at least 10 feet high and preferably higher to accommodate a chandelier. Unless you have an unusually large bathroom, try to keep your chandelier on the smaller side so that you can keep all design elements in proportion.

5.) ℝ𝕖𝕔𝕖𝕤𝕤𝕖𝕕 𝕃𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤 are popular throughout the house for their ability to illuminate rooms while remaining out of the way, either recessed or flush with the ceiling. Plus, they are such great value.

6.) ℙ𝕖𝕟𝕕𝕒𝕟𝕥 𝕃𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘 adds directed lighting to areas in the bathroom that need it the most. Not only that but pendant lighting catches your attention like no other since it's positioned at head-level or just above.

7.) 𝕄𝕚𝕣𝕣𝕠𝕣 𝕃𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥 gives the illusion that the mirror is floating off of the wall. Bathroom mirror lights often project from the wall to make room for a light behind the mirror. This light casts a soft, hazy glow around the mirror, onto the wall, for a mysterious effect.
