These images show a handsome solid/select Northern Red Oak floor we made for a builder’s summer cottage along Maryland’s Eastern Shore. This material was all harvested in Vermont and shows what’s possible when using a fiber that doesn’t have the demand that White Oak currently has. The majority of this floor was 8-16’ long after milling and it has a beautiful plain-sawn grain. Scroll through to see photos from milling and selecting this specific batch of lumber this past December. This client opted for all 7” face widths which look great in their interior. We could have also created random widths between 7-11” but these folks preferred the uniformity of all one width. If you plan to finish your Oak floor with anything other than a clear or white wash look . . . select Red Oak is a great alternative to White and offers significant savings. It’s also a fun way to utilize this beautiful resource we have here in northern New England, and support our local lumber partners.
