🏠 WHY DOES MSI PRESCOTT FLOORING COST MORE THAN LIFEPROOF? LET’S TALK QUALITY!
At Old School Tile Company, I’ve been getting this question quite a bit lately:
“Why is Lifeproof 22 mil flooring at the big-box stores about $1.00 per square foot cheaper than your MSI Prescott 20 mil flooring, even when yours is on sale?”
That’s a fair question, and I encourage everyone to do their own research!
Here’s something many customers don’t realize: A thicker wear layer doesn’t automatically mean a better floor!
There is much more to quality flooring than whether the box says 20 mil or 22 mil. The locking system, core construction, surface protection, installation requirements, and warranty are all important.
🔨 1. THE CLICKING SYSTEM MATTERS!
One of the biggest concerns with floating vinyl flooring is the locking mechanism that holds the planks together.
Some Lifeproof customers have reported broken locking tabs, separated joints, and installation problems. An uneven subfloor can put additional stress on those connections.
At Old School Tile Company, we put a tremendous amount of importance on the strength and reliability of the locking system. A floor is only as good as the connections holding it together!
💪 2. A STRONG, RIGID CORE
MSI Prescott features a Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) rigid core designed for stability and durability.
A quality rigid core helps flooring withstand everyday household demands and temperature changes.
Lifeproof offers different core constructions depending on the specific product, so it’s important to compare the actual floors rather than just the brand names.
🛡️ 3. SCRATCH PROTECTION — 20 MIL VS. 22 MIL
Here’s where customers often get confused.
Lifeproof advertises a 22 mil wear layer, while MSI Prescott features a 20 mil wear layer with CrystaLux Ultra™ protective technology.
That extra 2 mil does not automatically make Lifeproof more scratch-resistant!
The quality and composition of the protective finish are just as important as the thickness.
MSI’s CrystaLux Ultra coating is designed to resist everyday scratches, stains, and wear.
No vinyl flooring is completely scratchproof, regardless of what the advertising says.
🏋️ 4. DENT PROTECTION AND WARRANTY
MSI Prescott offers a limited lifetime residential warranty, with dent protection under applicable warranty terms.
That is an important feature worth examining, especially for busy households with furniture, pets, and children.
Always read the warranty details carefully because no flooring warranty covers every type of damage.
⏰ 5. NO-ACCLIMATION TECHNOLOGY
Another great advantage of MSI Prescott is its no-acclimation installation technology.
Under the manufacturer’s specified installation conditions, Prescott can be installed without the traditional waiting period required by some flooring products.
That can save time and make scheduling your project easier!
💰 SO WHY PAY MORE?
Because when you purchase flooring, you’re investing in something you expect to last for years.
You’re not just buying a 20 mil or 22 mil wear layer.
You’re buying the entire flooring system!
At Old School Tile Company, we believe the quality of the locking mechanism, the rigid core, the protective finish, and the manufacturer’s warranty matter far more than a couple of extra mils on a price tag.
I’m not saying every Lifeproof floor is a bad product. I’m saying don’t assume it’s a better product simply because it has a 22 mil wear layer or costs less.
And here’s something else worth remembering:
When you shop with us, you’re dealing with flooring professionals who can help you choose the right product, explain the installation requirements, and stand behind the service we provide.
We encourage you to compare products, ask questions, read reviews, and research the differences.
Sometimes the cheapest floor today can become the most expensive floor tomorrow if it doesn’t perform the way you expected!
