where mystical meets materials

Stained glass, symbol of the sacred for centuries, calls us out of ourselves to contemplate the transcendent.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: KENDRA SCHPOK

After learning stained glass in high school at age sixteen, I apprenticed at the DiPasqualie Studio in Lower Merion, PA, then went on to study glass at University of the Arts and The Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 1988 with a BFA in Glass from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. I have produced stained glass panels over the past 40 years both for residential and commercial settings and for the love of the medium.

My most recent work explores a contemporary twist on a traditional stained glass process. Architectural glass is comprised of numerous individual panels assembled to a monumental size. Unlike traditional architectural glass, I work on a much smaller scale, designing one large composition whose component parts work aesthetically as compositions in their own right. At other times, I start with one small panel and ‘build” the design from one starting point. I consider a piece successful when each small panel - whether simple or encrusted and complex - is as compelling as the whole together.
