When starting to build a frame with wax, the bees first draw out the beginnings of the cells, and then build them up, adding the wax secreted by themselves. The result is a double-sided comb with regular rows of bee cells.
The size of the combs depends on the shape and size of the standard hive frame.

In modern beekeeping, combs can be removed from the hive through the use of a frame system. The basis for the new honeycomb is a honeycomb waxed on a frame with a pre-stretched steel wire - a thin sheet of beeswax with bottoms and rudiments of cells squeezed out on both sides.
