Honeycomb without bees in beekeeping is called dry land. Dry land is substituted into families for their expansion, for storage of honey by bees and is used to form new families (layers)

The horizontal diameter of the bee cell is 5.3-5.7 mm (about four cells per 1 cm²), depth 10-12 mm; the thickness of combs with unsealed brood is on average 22 mm, and after their sealing it is up to 25 mm or more. The cell volume is about 0.28 cm3. Cells of combs are drone, honey and brood. They differ in size and depth. Honey - deeper, drone - wider.

As a result, a minimum of wax is spent on the construction of one cell - bees spend about 13 mg of wax on the construction of one bee cell, 30 mg of drone wax, and 140-150 g on the construction of the entire comb.

The waxy honeycombs of honey bees are the most perfect constructions in the world of insects. The bees draw cells from both sides of the mediastinum of the comb; the method of "fixing" of each of the cells does not provide for any gaps and inconsistencies in all three dimensions, providing a very tight and cost-effective packaging.

When starting to build a frame with wax, the bees first draw out the beginnings of the cells, and then build them up, adding the wax secreted by themselves. The result is a double-sided comb with regular rows of bee cells.
The size of the combs depends on the shape and size of the standard hive frame.

In modern beekeeping, combs can be removed from the hive through the use of a frame system. The basis for the new honeycomb is a honeycomb waxed on a frame with a pre-stretched steel wire - a thin sheet of beeswax with bottoms and rudiments of cells squeezed out on both sides.
