Introducing “Shimmer, Dark, Shimmer,” a remarkable collection of graphite drawings of the sea and limited edition photographs of Block Island’s oldest, most storied trees by interdisciplinary artist Sarah Bird.

Sarah’s drawings explore the ocean as a mediating force— dynamic, relational, and affective, while her archival digital prints celebrate the stature of trees, “restoring them to their essential standing in our web of being.” Through both media, Sarah examines these great protagonists in our more-than-human world.

A lover of the natural world, Read visited Block Island during the quiet winter months to capture the unspoiled, wild landscape on a 6x7 medium format camera with black and white film.

“I came to the island in the middle of winter with my Pentax 67 camera to walk the trails, beaches, and empty roads. I wanted to experience it in its slumber, to understand it more fully, with the human layer removed. What I found was an unmistakably powerful presence. The land is alive, with or without us.”
