I’m grateful to be showing my work among many amazing artists in LONGCHAMP Art Festival. Mindo Cloud Forest, Paper pulp and wire, 178 x 178 x 84 cm (70 x 70 x 33 in.), on view through September 6th in Pairs. //
Cookies, as I call the pod-shaped, colorful elements, are threaded into a multi-tiered light wire structure and makes slow turns, and sometimes animated wiggles in response to viewers moving within the room and stirring the air. I collect used photo-background paper from artists and photographers in my Brooklyn studio building to make paper pulp into a clay-like substance, and then these durable yet lightweight Cookies. The saturated colors are made without adding pigments or paints, and the textures vary, some with a smoother surface like macaroons and others with a coarser texture like oatmeal cookies. I then assemble them with wire structures, building the composition from bottom tiers upwards, feeling the weight and balance of each element in my hand. I hope the installation offers a sense of joy and calm through its gentle motion.
