A take on “her” bathroom with Tarun Tahiliani and Purple Backyard | Interior Design interior design.

The boteh (paisley teardrop) has been India’s most-traveled motif for centuries, carried out of Kashmir and into courts and fashion across the world. Tarun Tahiliani softens it into faded porcelain here, blush and sage worn like an old textile. Available to the trade only.

Sabyasachi’s ‘Pashm’ quietly lines a bedroom at Casa Verano. It’s named for pashmina, the fine wool of Kashmir, and behaves like the fabric with it’s soft, textured, and tonal look.

This wall is designed to recede so everything in front of it can lead. The carved wooden bed, with its turned posts and sculptural headboard, is the statement, and Pashm gives it the calm, textured backdrop it needs to hold the room.

The paintings at Ajanta are among the oldest surviving murals anywhere, made in a run of caves in western India starting around 200 BCE. What makes them remarkable is not only their age but their setting: painted deep underground, in spaces with no natural light, meant to be seen by the flames people carried in.

On this shade, that logic returns: the figures sit faint in sepia until the lamp is lit, then step forward the way they were always meant to be seen.

Spotted: The ‘Perch’ wallpaper lining the walls of the Azulian House, inside the gardens of The Leela Palace. The forest is one of the oldest subjects in Indian painting; dense, alive, teeming with detail.

Most people know VRSA as the wallpaper, the fabrics, the pretty things. But the real reason it exists goes back so much further.

For most of history, the finest things in the world were made in South Asia. Somewhere along the way, the making stayed ours and the name went to someone else. My family lived a version of that; merchants in Punjab before 1947, separated by a border from the makers they’d worked beside for generations.

I didn’t know all of this when I started, but it’s why VRSA has never felt like just a décor brand to me. It’s my attempt to bring South Asian craft back to the centre of luxury, and undiluted.

This September, it takes its next step: we’re bringing VRSA into the D&D Building in New York, and I couldn’t be more proud.

I’d been calling this our palace wallpaper but it’s actually a Persian garden. Sabyasachi’s ‘Persian Sanctuary’ takes the walled gardens the Mughals carried from Persia into India and gives every arch its own flowering tree and birds, a large-scale pattern that brings a whole new architecture to the room.

We wrapped all five walls of our powder room, and it’s become one of my favorite corners of our home, a mini escape into exactly the kind of sanctuary the name promises 💙🕊️
