What happens when a polo club drops the stuffy grandeur and goes full fashion house?

It started with Caroline Zurmely's footwear painting from Turn Gallery's latest group show, and it all came together from there. Of course, the Hermès sofa was a given.

Marie-Anne Oudejans amazing redesign for a former royal summer residence in Mount Abu, Rajasthan was the inspiration.

When you know, you know…

It’s not often I purchase a piece without a plan, but love can do funny things to a person and I fell hard for this piece. Of all the impulse buys a person can make, artwork is rarely one I regret.

In my experience, the most memorable pieces are equal parts beautiful and unexpected.

I'm sorry summer. I must confess that you, fall, are my favorite season. My son was born in the fall, pumpkins are a favorite squash, and I adore shorter days as I am part vampire. (I think the darkness is incredibly cozy and soothing.)

The glorious colors of fall are magnificent if you truly study them. I try and time "peak fall" to get out and see the burnished rubies and oxidized ochers, but they're just on the brink in Upstate NY. You can squint and see them here, as seen this past weekend in upstate NY. It wasn't far upstate though as it was just a fun day trip from the city to hike with Hermione and eat custard cones while viewing the distant Catskill Mountains. Happy fall y'all!

As an interior designer, much of my work is done solo, which I enjoy. Being in the flow of my creative process is part of what I love about this work! But, there’s also something special and invigorating about heading out to events like What’s New, What’s Next at the New York Design Center, to be in community with so many industry players.

I spent much of the day with Jen Smiga of Ultraviolet Agency, strolling through the streets of Manhattan between sessions. We explored new product lines at Corston, and I enjoyed a gelato while Jen spoke on a Women in Tech panel at Lexington Home Brands.

A self-professed introvert can get out and actually enjoy it, particularly when a social event is design-related!

An artist I discovered this year that you should know about is Sonya Kelliher Combs! I found her work at the amazing Anchorage Museum. I’m blown away by and obsessed with her haunting installation pieces.

The foundational point of the design of an interior will vary depending on which designer you’re speaking to. Some swear by always starting with the rug and for others, it’s the largest piece of furniture in the room. For me, it’s the art, followed by the overall space plan coming in a close second.

Art is often the most meaningful part of the design story. Some clients will have an art collection to begin with and from there, we’re curating. Most clients, though, are interested in acquiring and via this process, we’re able to discover so much about the client’s preferences, needs, hobbies, habits, etc... Really! Art sourcing is nothing if not personal, and there’s nothing better than selecting a piece that the sofa has to work with, not the other way around.

Beyond material and construction, what makes a piece last is simpler than people expect. It has to be both beautiful and useful. That pairing is design perfection. Beauty alone is not enough, and neither is utility. The pieces people keep tend to have both.

This summer was a bounty of travel, and I was ever the richer. Work was along for the ride, but I got to experience the glory of Alaska and glaciers in the summer. The land of the midnight sun didn't disappoint.

And, I was pleasantly surprised by an incredible art scene and museum in Anchorage. I knew I'd see beautiful totems via the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples of Southeast Alaska and British Columbia. But, wow. So much great handcrafted and natural beauty.
