For those who enjoy a lengthy caption...

I love the city I call home and have lived here longer than any other place, and that’s quite a lot if you’re counting.

There is a constant stream of visual stimuli here for the taking, and of course, the energy, the glorious energy. I manage it by popping in headphones and walking around while noticing everything. It’s this energy that informs my design, always, but the energy is transmuted into something that flows and is alive in each interior we create.

Flow is so important to an interior and to New York City. I find that I tap into the flow the most in my favorite neighborhoods with tiny storefronts selling the tiniest wares and restaurants with two or three things on their menus. The Lower East Side and the East Village are some places that just make me happy and thankful to live in a place that still has great storefront diversity.

A room with no natural light is tough, and technically, a room with no natural light can not be called a bedroom in New York City. I only encounter rooms with no natural light in bathrooms these days, in city apartments only. My favorite things to do with those are:

1) Make sure there are lots of levels of light, task lighting, plus ambient lighting. Yes, I love a pendant light in a bathroom too!

2) You’re going to have a mirror but think about the reflectivity of other surfaces in the space. Glossy wall tile perhaps?

3) Finally, artwork in a bathroom with no natural light is a must. Have moisture-friendly pieces (no oil paintings, please) but prints with high-end plexi are perfect.

Summer means family traveling, and this year’s trip was to Berlin and the former East German cities of Leipzig and Dresden.

I negotiated for a lot of art viewing and a sidetrip to my mecca. (Note the final selfie where you can see my head just almost blocking "Bauhaus." It was everything I knew it would be.)

A few teaser highlights here with same art heavy hitters (Neo Rauch and Otto Dix), fancy hotel digs in Berlin, pottery from the Zwinger in Dresden (incredible!!), and of course beer, glorious beer..
