The office’s reputation for simplicity and clarity of design strengthens with every project researched and completed, as we believe this to be the essential key to creating good and timeless environments for our clients. S4A’s nonhierarchical approach to design enables the office to create architecture free of stylistic limitations and firmly grounded in context. S4A was founded in 1999 by Michele Busiri-Vici. Together with current principal Clementina Ruggieri they share an academic background from both the US and Europe and more than 20 yrs professional experience in the United States. S4A was recently awarded 1st Prize for the competition “New Auditorium at the Riga Exhibition Center”, Latvia.

House on an Island, our recently completed guest house project on Shelter Island.
The roof gently twists from east to west, allowing the house to begin as a two-story volume facing east before transforming into a more intimate single-story space in the kitchen and living area.

House as a Garden. (2025)

We recently transformed this former raw industrial warehouse into a single family home conceived as a vertical loft: the three story residence centres around a double height living-room that serves as a courtyard, becoming the organizing space for circulation, kitchen and upstairs rooms.

House as a garden. (2025)

What used to be a raw industrial storage warehouse has become an intimate and warm residence for a young, creative couple in Brooklyn. Built across three levels, we conceived this single family home as a a vertical loft: a space that can hold many different versions of life. Work and play, solitude and gatherings, calm and chaos.

East Broadway Residential Tower photos (and a surprise one)

A few weeks ago, together with our friend, photographer Dario Lasagni, we walked the perimeter of our tower at 222 East Broadway, beginning at the Williamsburg Bridge and moving south along East Broadway.
The project was conceived as a vertical village, carefully calibrated to the scale and grain of the surrounding neighborhood rather than conceived as an isolated object.
The window openings, while appearing irregular, are the result of a rigorous inside-out process. Each is positioned in response to the specific spatial and experiential requirements of the apartments, producing a differentiated yet coherent composition.
This measured variation lends the façades a subtle rhythm and depth.

Working hands on.

For every project we build physical models. They are our most reliable tool for understanding proportion, mass and spatial relationships. A model quickly reveals what works and what doesn’t. These models evolve alongside the design, they go through different stages of details and craftsmanship. Unlike digital models, physical models are tangible and honest. They transform ideas into something real, keeping the design process active, curious and open. They surround our desks and quietly become part of our daily environment. We find ourselves peeking at them throughout the day. They take a life of their own, always revealing something new. And yes, they are incredibly fun to make!
