Wid Chapman Architects

Wid Chapman Architects Wid Chapman Architects designs well-considered, welcoming places that effectively meld architecture Magazine Annual Review Award.

An award-winning firm specializing in hospitality, education, and residential design, Wid Chapman Architects (WCA) approaches each project by synthesizing the client's program and point of view with contextual site conditions to create a concise and achievable architectural vision. The firm seeks to instill integrity and unity in spaces by holistically considering their architectural components as

well as their interior design elements. Visual brainstorming is the genesis of WCA’s hotel and restaurant designs, fine-tuned by its clients’ input and refinements. This pre-design phase helps solidify the “brand” for a project, leading to a successful finished environment. WCA has completed projects both domestically and internationally, in locations including New York, California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington State, the Dominican Republic, Korea, Malaysia, and Mexico. The firm is a “preferred designer” for Starwood Hotels and Resorts. WCA’s work has been featured nationally in Contract magazine, Crain's New York Business, Hospitality Design, Interior Design, New York Magazine, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal, and internationally in Figaro Japan, Interiors India, International Design (I.D.), and Shotenkenchiku. In 2000, the firm’s designs for three Elixir juice bars in New York City garnered an I.D. WCA is headed by Wid Chapman, AIA, who received his architectural education at the Rhode Island School of Design. A former chair of the interior design department of Parsons the New School for Design, he currently serves on its senior faculty. Wid has guest lectured in the U.S. as well as internationally in Brazil, the Dominican Republic, France, India, Malaysia, and Singapore. An authority on lifestyle design, he is co-author of the topical books Home Design in an Aging World (Fairchild Books, 2008) and Unassisted Living (Random House, 2011).

This hotel was fully designed from the ground up at Brooklyn’s southern edge, including the interior, the exterior, and the rooftop. The design focused on creating a cohesive, elevated experience with thoughtful interiors, careful material selection, and strong spatial flow. Positioned to connect with the surrounding neighborhood and cityscape, the project balanced intimacy and presence within the vibrant Brooklyn context. While the hotel was ultimately not brought to life due to COVID-19, the renderings showcase the attention to detail and design intent behind every element.

Construction has officially begun on this two-level restaurant in Rockefeller Plaza, with renderings now released offering a glimpse of the refined, atmospheric experience ahead. Inspired by the social clubs of a bygone era, the interiors feature gilded and mirrored ceilings, rich leather seating, bespoke lighting, and striking artwork by David Yarrow.

An open-flame showcase kitchen serves as both a culinary and visual focal point, while the lower level hosts an intimate bar with an arched mirrored back bar. The upper level provides additional dining with clover-leaf banquettes, a secondary pocket bar, and a private dining room designed for exclusive gatherings.

We look forward to seeing the final results later this year!

This development is proposed for a premier waterfront site in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood at the southern edge of Brooklyn, New York. Set directly along the water, the site overlooks Sheepshead Bay as it opens to the Atlantic Ocean beyond, offering expansive views and a strong connection to the surrounding maritime landscape. The location’s edge condition and unobstructed horizon create a sense of arrival, grounding the project in both place and movement while extending its presence outward to the wider world.

At the center of this West Village refresh is a bar designed to echo the chef’s Peruvian and European heritage. Walnut slatted wood, tropical leaf motifs, linen-wrapped ceilings, rattan lighting, wood fans, and lush plantings surround the bar with warmth and texture, giving it a strong architectural presence within the space.

Proud to highlight Spice Symphony, featured at Taste of Times Square earlier this September. Their blend of bold Indian flavors and modern technique is a reminder that great design happens in many forms. Whether it is a carefully composed dish or a thoughtfully crafted space, the best experiences come from balancing tradition, intention, and innovation. Spice Symphony captures that spirit beautifully.

The Beekman Lounge captures the balance between heritage and modern refinement.

Soaring ceilings, arched windows, and strong vertical lines establish a rhythm that feels both grand and intimate. Deep tile tones ground the space while brass accents and sculptural lighting add warmth and precision.

Every detail serves the architecture, from the layered seating that encourages connection to the symmetry of the bar framed by natural light. The result is a space that feels timeless, elevated, and distinctly New York.

Design that celebrates rhythm and craft.

At Industry Kitchen, every architectural element works in harmony. The sculptural ceiling feature diffuses light in warm layers, creating movement and depth above a backdrop of geometric precision.

The repetition of pattern, texture, and reflection turns function into art. From the illuminated bottle wall to the sculpted overhead form, the design balances structure with atmosphere, shaping a space that feels both grounded and dynamic.
