The Ballet Russes, founded by Serge Diaghilev, came to Paris in 1909 to present ground-breaking ballet productions featuring the great artists of the age, including (among others) Nijinsky, Stravinsky, Matisse and our subject here: Leon Bakst. The Paris season was a sensation. In 1921 Diaghilev broke new ground with a new production of The Sleeping Princess in London, based on Tchaikovsky’s full length Sleeping Beauty ballet that premiered in St Petersburg in 1890. Diaghilev’s production was lavish, with over 300 costumes and elaborate sets, all by Bakst. The exorbitant cost was never recouped, almost shuttering the company. As a young ballet dancer Matthew was obsessed by Diaghilev and Bakst. Here’s a peek into that golden moment in art, design and dance history.

Books, both new and old on the topics of Venetian art, architecture and history fill his library shelves. Many written by scholars and dear friends who share his passion or have served on the board of . Save Venice is an American non-profit that preserves the art and monuments of Venice, Italy. Throughout that great city are important restored works thanks to Save Venice’s team of scholars, supporters and a staff who work together to conserve art and celebrate history. Dog people, cat people and bird people are a breed among themselves. Matthew recalls the memories of past lives of his beloved dogs from childhood onward, through old photos and other meaningful objects. Not that he needs reminding of their existence or their love. Three of these clocks have been in Matthew’s collection for more than twenty years, all have stories. The rooster clock is carved wood, possibly Italian, or perhaps Scandinavian? The most recent addition and most simple in design holds layered meaning that is deeply felt. This English clock from the 1930s gets wound every Sunday and keeps excellent time, each quarter hour heralded by resonate chimes. Matthew loves old clocks so much he wrote a book on the topic! Matthew never misses a chance to shop for antiques, even in Japan as a ballet dancer in his 20’s. Performing in a strange and massive production by artist Steven Arnold, it was a heady time in the 1980’s. Steven’s work was collected by Baryshnikov, Diana Vreeland, Cher, Yves Saint Laurent, Salvador Dali and others. This beautifully attired, early 20th century doll in its original case holds lovely memories of place and time, of the utterly unique Steven Arnold, and a circle of dear ballet friends that holds fast to this day.

Matthew came to his passion for beautiful “dishes” naturally. The most profound gift from his mother and grandmother, and later by “Ed & Tony” was their embrace and encouragement in the development of his eye. Mentorship is everything. Btw, the Davenport part dessert service was made between c1800-1815. That’s well over 200 years of this extraordinary pearlware set existing somewhat intact. The painted scenes tell us it was likely created for an English country house.

Another story about objects that tell stories. This one about Ruth St. Denis, an icon of the modern dance world when she hit the stage as a solo artist in 1905. In the early 1950s she befriended Gene Maiden, a young man with an eye for art and an expert in antique engravings. This dance/art legacy was passed to Matthew who tells their story here.

19th century English, artist unknown, this little oil painting of a pastoral scene looks very much like the Hudson Valley where Matthew lives now. And yes, he really made those curtains.
