👀 Check this out! Here’s a sneak peak of the new space we’ve had the pleasure of working on
with the team. Tonight is the soft opening of Buunni’s new Inwood location which
will bring the space to life with an open mic night. We are happy to be a part of the design end of
this project and support this team strengthening their connection to the Inwood community in an
updated space that reflects their brand and Ethiopian roots.

👋 Take a look at these exciting developments from our MSCI London project…

How did we get here?

Our design process always begins with conversation. Getting to know the individual members
who make up a larger team helps us better understand how design choices can serve a diverse
group of people.

We focus on understanding a team’s rhythms and workflows from an individual’s perspective to
that of the whole team. Everyone works differently and responds to the conditions of space in
unique ways. Renderings from our MSCI London project are an exciting development in our
design process, materializing the scale of this 52,000sq ft office project.

Using the open plan of the new office space, we ensured the availability of a wide array of
workspaces that cater to both solo and collaborative work. Featured above are open and lively
work spaces like in our Open Collab Spaces and Alleys (1,3,4,6) in addition to quiet and
focused Meeting Rooms (2) and a Library (5). These types of spaces are not reserved solely for
schools and libraries, but can be thoughtfully integrated into workplaces to support user
wellbeing throughout every stage of the workday.

Brain and Design Connections 🧠

quotes from reminding us of the many ways the built environment plays a role in our emotional and physical wellbeing. Long before we consciously register the effects of a space, our brain is jumping in to adjust our nervous system to details like color, shape, texture, and layout. These design details are not neutral, they play a role in our overall wellbeing from the moment we enter a space.

We think about this constantly when designing for our clients. Color and material choice are top of mind when creating a space that will foster not only productivity but the mental and physical health that is necessary for longevity and overall wellness.

We are grateful to share that our Truro Residential project was a Silver Winner for Best High-Performance / Energy-Efficient Home at this year’s PRISM Awards!

Hosted by the Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Boston, the PRISM Awards celebrate the finest projects and outstanding achievements of professionals in the home building industry, and we are grateful to see our project among so much impressive work.

This project was developed with consideration for the natural environment as a key collaborator. Inspired by the local vernacular and positioned to highlight the existing landscape, the project lends itself to energy-efficient operations year round.

Thank you to our collaborators on our Truro project, including Cape Associates Inc. (),The SEED (.lighting), and LeBlanc Jones Landscape Architects ().

When we look at the changing landscape of our cities, it bears remembering that even small details in our built environment impact the daily lives of each and every one of us. The same element that provides a positive experience for one person can at the same time impose a negative one for another. As we think deeply about the design of public spaces, it is important to consider and understand how it is dictated by governmental policies while simultaneously influenced by developers and corporations.

As the cold New York winter is soon to set in, we’re looking back at some of our Studio Fōr travels this past summer 🌅

Much warmer weather welcomed us in Portugal and Japan. Two places with such distinct characters, both full of inspiration and architectural intrigue. Wandering the city streets one sees a constant mixture of old and new, centuries old materials interacting with the newest technologies in our urban environment.

Whether working in New York or abroad, we always consider the architectural and cultural contexts of where we design. Getting out into the cities we work in is essential to incorporating that ethos into our work. Observing the ebbs and flows of daily life, the nuances of activity and interacting with those in each city is such a joy and education.

This season, Studio Fōr is off to more travels that we are excited to share with you soon!

Let us know, what’s your favorite city for architectural inspiration?

Here’s what we saw:
1. Kyoto: Senbon Tori at Fushimi Inari Taisha, “Kyoto Gates”
2. Garden Of Fine Arts designed by Tadao Ando
3. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
4. Horse sculpture, Tokyo
5. Minato-Nishiazabu district, Tokyo
6+7. Senso-ji (Buddhist Temple)
8. Strolling through residential neighborhood near Tamar’s-gawa River in Kyoto
9+10. Kyoto’s Saiho-Ji (“Moss Temple”)
11. Kyoto’s Kaneicho neighborhood
12. Ceramic tiles in the kiln at Kawai Kanjiro’s Home (famous Japanese ceramicist’s house now museum)
13. Church doors in Lisbon’s Misericordia district
14. Old wood details!
15. Parque Infantil da Praca das Flores
16. Lisboa’s Santo Antonio district

Our MSCI London Project is live!

Studio Fōr is excited to officially announce the location of the new MSCI London office in the historic Exchange House in the newly redeveloped Bishops Square.

Designed by SOM and constructed in 1990, this ten-story office building is uniquely built to span over the tracks of London’s Liverpool Street Station.

During the early stages of design in the late 1980s, the location for the development proved to be a distinct design challenge as the development could not disrupt the existing train lines and their daily operations. These constraints, however, inspired the engineering masterplan that gives the building its unique look. With only 5% of the building’s footprint touching the ground, the building is largely suspended by four, seven-story tied arches that bridge over 78 meters or 250ft. With the lift core, fire stairs, and lobby suspended from the bridge structure, a vast plaza opens up under the building seamlessly connecting to the green space while the logic of the preexisting urban infrastructure remains untouched. Today, the building is jointly owned by British Land and GIC.

We’re excited to continue sharing our design progress as we work with MSCI in this historic building!

Today is Election Day! For those of us in New York City, this election positions us at the precipice of change. In recent months, we have witnessed a campaign for Mayor that has shown us what it means to mobilize communities around shared values in a shared city.

As designers of the built environment, our work is impacted by the policies of those in places of political power. Issues like affordability and transportation are facets of the built environment with which our work is in constant dialogue. Our mission as practitioners of design and building is to create spaces that foster wellbeing and belonging. That work, however, is incomplete without the policies that make it possible to afford to live and raise families in a city like New York.

We hope that this year’s mayoral race is an indication of a hopeful and necessary shift in leadership and policy. The candidates who are running represent a wide range of New Yorkers and some of them vow to bring forward policies that will benefit everyone by offering affordable housing, universal health and child care, and free public transportation. To us, this sounds like a New York for each and every one of us!

Regardless of who you believe should be our next mayor, we urge you to cast your ballot today! Exercise your right to vote and determine who represents the best interests of our communities here in New York.
