René Lalique, “Thistle of Lorraine” Bracelet
c. 1901-1903

A defining figure of Art Nouveau jewelry, Lalique transformed the natural world into sculptural works of art.

Here, translucent plique-à-jour enamel evokes the delicate structure of thistle leaves, while opals, baroque freshwater pearls, and richly hued basse-taille enamel lend the composition an ever-changing interplay of color and light.

Beyond its botanical beauty, the thistle carries a deeper significance: a symbol of Lorraine, it expressed the French longing for the return of Alsace-Lorraine following the Franco-Prussian War.

In Lalique’s hands, a jewel becomes both a celebration of nature and an expression of cultural identity.

What happens when East meets West?
A new language of modern design.

From Tiffany Studios in New York — to Josef Hoffmann in Vienna — the art and design of China and Japan profoundly shaped the visual language of Western artists at the turn of the 20th century.

These influences were not simply decorative. Artists and designers looked to East Asian art for new approaches to geometry, symbolism, ornament, and the relationship between form and function.

Explore the slides above to see how these ideas were reinterpreted—from Tiffany Studios’ “Chinese Pattern” picture frame and Geometric lamp to Josef Hoffmann’s hammered silver work, where Eastern motifs meet the emerging language of modern design.

Tiffany Studios New York, “Snowball Hydrangea” Floor Lamp

Tiffany’s fascination with the hydrangea was deeply personal.

The flowers flourished at his Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall, where he admired them both in the gardens and throughout the interiors.

This was the first-ever example of Tiffany allowing the contour of the plant to determine the shape of the shade, mimicking the shrub’s densely clustered form.

Within the shade, layers of mottled glass bring the hydrangea to life: individual rings of opaque white glass suggest blossoms clustered among translucent green leaves, while passages of blue evoke the sky glimpsed through the foliage.

With 838 round brilliant-cut diamonds totaling approximately 36.50 carats, this exceptional necklace exemplifies Cartier’s mastery of articulated jewelry.

Dating to c. 1990, Cartier’s extraordinary “Walking Panthère” collar necklace transforms the Maison’s most enduring animal motif into a bold, sculptural jewel.

Five articulated panthers appear in low relief at the center, each pavé-set with brilliant-cut diamonds and framed by polished 18K gold.

The motif flows seamlessly into Cartier’s signature diamond brickwork links, creating a remarkable sense of movement across the neck.

Tiffany Studios New York, “Dragonfly” Table Lamp
ca. 1900.

Among Tiffany Studios’ most celebrated designs, the Dragonfly lamp captures Louis Comfort Tiffany’s fascination with the ephemeral beauty of the natural world.

Dating to circa 1900, this example brings together blue and white mottled glass dragonflies, delicate wire-mesh wings, vivid red eyes, and a rippled blue-green glass ground.

Look closely, and the shade reveals another layer of experimentation: opalescent glass “cabochons,” varied textures, and subtle shifts of color that come alive when illuminated.

Beneath it, a rare patinated bronze base takes the form of twisting vines, extending organically into tendrils that support the shade.
