Join Arlie in her “Girl Cave,” where the Lillian Nassau magic happens. Her office is a Tiffany treasure trove with a world-class reference library established in the 1960s and is peppered with little pockets of fun to keep the laughter flowing. Whether it’s sports memorabilia or a fidget fragment from Laurelton Hall, there’s always something fascinating — and uniquely Arlie! – to be found.

Where should we put her tribute to the 2026 New York Knicks in this packed Girl Cave?!

Tiffany Beyond the Basics: What were those little loops on the underside of Tiffany lamp shades for?

For years, collectors assumed that the loops were meant to secure hanging Tiffany lamp screens – but the real reason dates back to the sales floor. Shades bought at the Tiffany Studios bankruptcy sales in the early 1930s were found with price tags still hanging from the loops, a discreet and classy way to price a lamp. We’ve since found tag remnants in our own shades, some over 100 years old.

Now that you’re in the loop, should we revive the tradition here at Lillian Nassau?

In 1980, Arlie faced a tough decision: join a prestigious auction house, or take a chance on Lillian Nassau. Lillian was virtually unknown outside of the art world, but the New York Times had dubbed her the “doyenne” of Art Nouveau and Tiffany by 1979. She was a pioneer, always searching for new talent. A young Arlie fit the bill.

Would you have bet on the auction house, or the pioneer few outside the art world had heard of yet?

If you saw this in the wild, would you think it’s Tiffany? Tell us in the comments.

This “Moorish lamp” isn’t leaded glass, Tiffany’s most famous look, it’s blown glass. Its real catalog name? “Pumpkin Fancy Gleason Shade with Ball Fringe” (catalog #215).

Made around 1906, this rare opaque blown glass base looks like a cucumber or watermelon rind. We have even had a staff member mistake it for ceramic. That’s how good a Tiffany illusion can be.

This lamp has been called the wrong name for over 100 years, even by me.

Everyone calls this the “Crocus” lamp, but Tiffany Studios’ own 1906 catalog lists it as the “Tulip Cluster.” First shown at the 1902 Turin Exhibition, this is one of Tiffany’s earliest electrified lamp designs and the glass tells the story: transparent petals, opalescent background glass inspired by a white opal, and a signature Tiffany only used between 1902-1904.

The best part isn’t the name, though, it’s how this piece survived. Passed from a wealthy original owner to a household staff member decades ago, likely when Tiffany glass was considered “out of style,” it stayed in that family for generations before we acquired it.

Team “Crocus” or Team “Tulip Cluster”: which name are you sticking with?

Save this for the next time someone calls it a Crocus lamp.

Part 3: Everyone has been calling this lamp the wrong name forever!

This isn’t an “Acorn” shade – Tiffany Studios’ own 1906 catalog calls it “Vine Border,” and if you look closely and you’ll see leaves on a vine, not acorns.

However, the name isn’t even the wild part: this base may be a one-of-a-kind. I’ve never seen this mossy lime green glass on another Tiffany base. Add the 25% upcharge for the gold finish, the hand-cut metalwork, and glassblowing technique, and you start to understand why this piece stops me in my tracks after 50 years.

What are some other Tiffany misnomers?

Before the iconic Tiffany Dragonfly lamp existed there was “Dragonfly and Water Flowers,” Clara Driscoll’s original design shown in 1899 at the Grafton Galleries in London. It was so labor-intensive and costly to produce that Tiffany Studios had to reimagine it. Gone were the water flowers, replaced by the almond-shaped jewels you see in this shade.

The original Grafton lamp has passed through our hands twice before we placed it in the permanent collection of The Corning Museum of Glass (Corning Museum of Glass).

This is one of the most intricate Tiffany Studios peacock lamps we’ve ever had – and we’re not convinced that Clara Driscoll designed it.

Look closely at the shade: dozens of hand-selected glass tiles in lavender, blue, and green form the peacock’s “eyes,” each one uniquely colored. The bronze base is hand-chased to mirror the bird’s body and feathers, right down to the mosaic inlay at the foot, creating a sculptural effect.

We’ve had this particular lamp twice now: once decades ago and again today. Its story runs from a Marshall Field’s purchase, to a Chicago collection, to Lillian Nassau, then to a New England collector, and back to us again.

Would you display this in your home?

Everyone thinks they know what Favrile means, but even the dictionary gets it wrong. While Favrile is synonymous with Tiffany glass, Tiffany Studios made a little bit of everything – including a wide range of art glass.

Every solution fell short, until we had one custom made. This rare Tiffany Studios lamp deserved nothing less than an elegant, fully reversible electrification that preserves every original part.
