- Ancient Greece and Rome (around 500 BCE to 500 CE): were made with wheat flour, olive oil, and honey, often served as a sweet bread or dessert.
- Medieval Europe (around 500 to 1500 CE): Fruit and sweet breads were popular, often made with dried fruits, nuts, and spices.
- 17th and 18th centuries: Sugar became more widely available, leading to the development of sweeter , like pound and sponge .
- 19th century: The Industrial Revolution introduced new technologies, like baking powder and mechanical mixers, making production easier and more accessible.
- 20th century: New ingredients and techniques emerged, such as electric mixers, commercial baking powder, and a wide range of flavorings and decorations.
