Functionality and warmth don’t have to be mutually exclusive, and this design embraces both.   Residential influences, layered materials, and thoughtfully planned gathering spaces soften the scale of this 45 000 square ft workplace, creating an environment that feels welcoming, familiar, and deeply connected to the people who use it.

Even with an extensive set of needs: test kitchens, production backdrops, prop storage, private offices, flexible workstations, and communal gathering spaces, the space feels like the heart of a home at every turn.

For Float Studio, projects like this reinforce a belief we return to often, which is that good design is about creating places where people genuinely want to be.

As workplaces continue to evolve, one thing has become increasingly clear: secondary spaces are not secondary.

At Float Studio, we see kitchens, lounges, and gathering spaces as critical infrastructure for community building. When designed intentionally, these spaces create opportunities for connection.

For this financial firm in NoMad, we designed a kitchen and lounge space anchored by a 12-foot island clad in hand-fired tile alongside a colourful coffee bar, pantry, and lounge space featuring mixed seating with cornflower blue accents throughout. The result is a space that supports both everyday routines and the culture happening around them.

Our latest project for Antiwork, founders of Gumroad, started with a simple idea: if people are choosing to come into the office, the environment should give them a reason to be there.

This workplace challenges the idea that offices should feel generic, temporary, or built purely for efficiency. Instead, the space prioritizes collaboration, visibility and connection through carefully considered sightlines, shared spaces, soft seating, and a layout intentionally designed around seeing and hearing one another.

Wrapped in a retro-future material palette of deep colors and warm textures, the space feels simultaneously nostalgic and forward-thinking.

Because perhaps the future of work is about creating better spaces for humans to work together.

Functional spaces deserve thoughtful details too.

Designed for our client, a financial firm based in NoMad, this custom butter yellow credenza became the answer to an unavoidable challenge: where do you put all of the technology required to run a modern boardroom without letting it define the room?

Our solution was a custom credenza with perforated panels that allow for ventilation and connectivity while concealing the technology needed to support the space behind the scenes.

Positioned alongside stainless steel tambour detailing, bold blue carpeting, and a layered material palette, the piece contributes to the overall design language of the boardroom proving that functional moments can still become defining design details.

A workplace designed to host it all.

Inside Food52’s Brooklyn Navy Yard headquarters, commercial kitchens sit beside entertaining spaces, prop storage supports production teams, and meeting rooms double as places to gather. Every corner was designed to function commercially while still feeling warm, welcoming, and unmistakably like home.

Spaces like the social kitchen positioned across from the “cheeseboard room”pictured here reflect what this project was always about: creating an environment where work, hospitality, creativity, and community could comfortably coexist.

Inside this reception area of our project in NoMad, we wanted to ensure that the first touchpoint for guests visiting this financial firm felt welcoming and energized.

A custom designed sculptural reception desk inspired by Vittorio Introini and finished in deep Lyon’s blue sets the tone and reflects the building’s 1970s character, while a striped Dedar sofa from TRNK anchors the lounge. Nearby, a bespoke console nods to Sergio Rodrigues, bringing a layer of modernist minimalism to the entry sequence.

Above the reception desk a porthole offers a glimpse into the boardroom, where that same attention to detail continues. Custom bleacher seating around the perimeter of the boardroom gives this highly functional space an amphitheatre-like atmosphere, while acoustical drapes add privacy and visual softness to the space. The palette of purply-blue broadloom from Bentley Mills , stainless steel tambour detailing, and leather gives the room a revival aesthetic that still feels current.   Project by Float Studio

“There are certain elements in design that no one outside of the industry really thinks about until they are forced to, and commercial carpeting is a big one! It is not particularly glamorous, it is rarely the thing that clients get excited about first, and yet it ends up affecting almost everything about how a workplace feels once people are actually in it. So that’s why at Float Studio, we spend an absurd amount of time thinking about carpet.”

The design of this space leans into variety and definition, proving that a cohesive environment doesn’t have to feel the same at every turn. We designed this 45 000 square foot space to have a layered sense of depth throughout, with open sight lines and careful planning to maintain a strong sense of flow despite the number of programs housed within one office.

Each area carries its own identity, and is ultimately tied together through a carefully curated residentially leaning palette, along with subtle references to the brand’s own product lines.

After working closely to find a location that could truly support their team, this three-floor office became home to . Back in 2023, we explored plan after plan, testing how best to organize their workflow across multiple levels before moving into the interior architecture and full drawing set.

The main level transitions from reception into a shared workspace with a mix of desking options, a tucked-away kitchenette, and a central printer station, with enclosed meeting rooms positioned nearby.
