Most mattresses are designed around a 5 to 7 year replacement cycle. The materials guarantee it: foam compresses, adhesives crack, comfort fades.

Vispring is engineered against that cycle.

Vanadium steel springs, made in-house in Plymouth, hold their tensile memory for decades. Hand-tied natural fillings retain their loft without chemical breakdown. Behind it all: an un-prorated 30-Year Guarantee.

Buy once. Sleep well for a generation.

In an economy of disposable everything, what do you still own that was built to last?

What if some of the most important investments in your home are the ones your guests never see?

Beautiful homes are often defined by what catches the eye: art, lighting, millwork, furniture, and carefully chosen finishes.

But thoughtful design goes beyond appearance.

The mattress is one example. Hidden beneath the linen are the materials, support, and craftsmanship that influence an experience repeated every night.

Our latest article, “The Luxury of the Unseen,” explores why some of the most considered choices in a home are made not for display, but for the person who lives there.

For over 120 years, Vispring has focused on one thing, how a bed should feel.

Every bed is made by hand in Plymouth, England. Pocket springs are nested one by one, natural fibers are layered carefully, and each piece is side-stitched by craftsmen who have spent years learning their craft. Nothing is rushed, and it shows.

This is not simply comfort. It is considered support, built to respond to the body with accuracy and consistency over time.

That experience is now available in Manhattan.

Our showroom is designed to be quiet and unhurried, so you can take your time, try different feels, and understand what works best for you, with guidance from specialists who know the beds in detail.

Most modern products are designed to feel frictionless.

Produced quickly. Scaled endlessly. Packaged identically.

Against that backdrop, true craftsmanship reveals itself differently.

Not immediately. But gradually.

That presence changes the relationship people form with an object.

It no longer feels interchangeable. It feels connected to care.

What separates a handmade mattress from a mass-produced one?

A Vispring mattress is still built by hand in Plymouth, England, as it has been since 1901, rather than by the logic of mass production.

Springs are nested individually by hand. Natural fibres are layered carefully rather than compressed mechanically. Tensions are chosen for each sleeper, from soft to extra firm, and can be split between the two sides of the bed where partners differ.

These details were not made to be written about. They were made to be felt, slowly, through lived experience.

A mattress made this way rarely calls attention to itself.

It simply becomes part of daily life, night after night, year after year, until replacing it becomes difficult to imagine.

That is the difference between something made to be produced and something made to be lived with.

Not always visible. Not immediately.
But over time, it is difficult to ignore.

Craftsmanship is not measured by how quickly something is made.

It is measured by how quietly it performs over time.

If you are curious how that difference feels, experience the collection at the Vispring New York showroom in SoHo.

People tend to form stronger emotional connections with objects that feel thoughtfully made.

Not because they are perfect. But because they feel considered.

A handmade dining table becomes marked by years of meals and conversations. A leather chair softens according to how someone sits in it.

A well-made mattress gradually becomes familiar to the body, perhaps more intimately than any other object in the home.

Many products today are designed with replacement in mind rather than longevity.

The finest handcrafted objects are designed differently.

Longevity over obsolescence
Consistency over novelty
Long-term ownership over repeated replacement

Why guarantee a mattress for thirty years?

At Vispring, this is exactly what the 30-Year Guarantee is built around. It stands behind every mattress and divan made in Plymouth, England.

Not just a promise of durability.

A confidence that the relationship between a person and their bed deepens rather than diminishes over time.
The object settles into life gradually. It earns familiarity. It becomes associated with routines, comfort, and memory.

That is a very different relationship from consumption.

It is the difference between a transaction and a choice that still feels right a decade later.

Some objects can be evaluated through specifications.
Others have to be experienced.

A handcrafted mattress belongs firmly in the second category.

Experience the collection at the Vispring New York showroom in SoHo, where nine handcrafted models can be explored in person through a private consultation.

Your bedroom is cold. So why are you still waking up warm?

The air conditioning is on. The fan is running at full speed. Everything around you feels cool.

But beneath the covers, your body can be experiencing something very different.

That is because nighttime comfort is shaped not only by room temperature, but also by the materials directly beneath you and how they handle heat and moisture.

Our latest article explores why a cooler room does not always mean a more comfortable night, and why breathability matters during the summer in New York.

Nearly every fine mattress made today rests on pocket springs.

Only one bed maker can trace them back to its own beginning. Vispring has handcrafted beds in Plymouth, England since 1901, and the pocket spring is where its story starts.

In 1899, the engineer James Marshall had a simple idea: rather than lacing every spring together, encase each one in its own fabric pocket, free to respond to the body on its own. Mattress design has followed that idea ever since.

Two years later, John Nolon and Frederick James acquired the patent and founded the company that became Vispring. 125 years on, every Vispring mattress is still made by hand in the same city.

The history is not the most interesting part. What matters is what Vispring declined to change.

Why does making springs in-house matter?

Most manufacturers buy their springs from specialist suppliers. Vispring still makes every spring itself, drawn from its own vanadium steel wire, to its own specification, under its own quality control. So when Vispring stands behind its 30-Year Guarantee, it is guaranteeing a component it built with its own hands.

Few bed makers anywhere in the world retain that level of control over the most important part of the finished product.

What does hand-nested actually mean?

Each spring is enclosed in a breathable calico cotton pocket, then nested by hand into a tight honeycomb formation by skilled craftspeople in Plymouth. Rather than behaving as one unit, every spring answers independently to the shoulders, hips, spine and legs, so the mattress adapts to each part of the body at once.

The same thinking runs through every material inside.

Real Shetland Wool and British fleece wool regulate temperature and moisture naturally. Hand-teased horsetail adds resilience and keeps air moving. Silk and cashmere, in selected collections, bring softness without a gram of synthetic foam.

And it does not stop at the mattress. Vispring's sprung divans carry the same hand-nested pocket springs, so the support philosophy runs unbroken from the base to the sleeping surface. That consistency is rare.

In 2024, Vispring received the King's Award for Enterprise in International Trade, one of the United Kingdom's highest honours for business, recognising more than a century of craft carried into the present.

Luxury is often read as beautiful materials, or skilled hands. Perhaps the rarest luxury is something quieter: building every critical component yourself, refusing to compromise on the parts no one ever sees, and holding that standard for 125 years.

That is the story inside every Vispring mattress.

To feel what it means in person, visit the Vispring New York showroom in SoHo and spend some time with the collection. Luxury Beds, London 1901.

A handle on a mattress is not something most people stop to think about.

And maybe that is the point.

It is one of those quiet details that only matters when the bed is actually being lived with, when it needs to be turned, moved, adjusted, or cared for over time.

At Vispring, details like this are part of the thinking.

A mattress is not made just for the moment it enters a room. It is made for years of use, care, and comfort.

So even something as simple as a handle has a purpose. Not decorative.

Not unnecessary. Just considered.

And often, that is where you see the difference between something made quickly and something made properly.

Most luxury mattress brands look similar on the showroom floor.

Beautiful fabrics.
Natural fibres.
Hand tufting.
Elegant craftsmanship.

From a distance, they can appear remarkably alike.

The real differences are found much deeper inside the mattress.

Vispring is one of the very few luxury mattress manufacturers that still engineers and manufactures its own pocket springs entirely in-house.

That matters because spring is the foundation of a mattress.

It determines how the mattress responds to movement, distributes weight, maintains support over decades, and ultimately how it feels after years of use.

Most manufacturers purchase springs from specialist suppliers.

Vispring builds its own.
Every vanadium steel spring is produced to Vispring's own specification, under its own quality control, before being hand-nested into individually calico-pocketed units by skilled craftspeople in Plymouth.

When Vispring offers a 30-year guarantee, it is guaranteeing a component it engineered and manufactured itself.

That level of vertical integration has become increasingly uncommon, not just in the mattress industry, but across manufacturing as a whole.

The philosophy continues beyond the mattress.

Vispring's sprung divans are built using the same independently pocketed spring technology, creating a complete sleep system rather than simply placing a mattress on top of a rigid base.

For couples, the company also offers split-tension construction, allowing each side of the same mattress to be handcrafted to a different firmness.

One partner doesn't have to compromise simply because the other sleeps differently.

Ownership continues after delivery as well.

Over the years, Vispring provides mattress turning services to help natural fibres settle evenly and preserve consistent comfort throughout the life of the bed.

These are details many buyers never see.
But they're precisely the details that determine how a mattress performs ten, fifteen, or twenty years later.

Vispring didn't become one of the world's most respected luxury mattress makers because it uses better marketing.

It earned that reputation by retaining control over the parts most companies outsourced long ago.

Perhaps that's why, more than 125 years after pioneering the pocket spring, the company continues to build its mattresses much the same way: patiently, deliberately, and without compromise.

If you'd like to experience the craftsmanship firsthand, visit the Vispring New York showroom at 459 Broome Street, SoHo, where nine handcrafted models can be explored through a private consultation.

There is something quietly radical about a bed that asks nothing of you.

Except to return to it each night and rest.

The appeal of artisan craftsmanship is not nostalgia.

It is about humanity.

People want homes filled with objects that feel grounded, tactile, and real. Things that soften daily life rather than constantly demand attention.

Most objects in a house are simply used. The finest pieces are lived with.

A bed is one of the few items that directly impacts daily health, mood, and cognitive and physical recovery. Its value isn't just aesthetic. It's restorative.

A mattress is deeply personal in ways most furniture is not.

It responds directly to the body.
It shapes how someone rests, recovers, and moves through daily life.
It becomes part of a person's most private routine.

Which means the way it is made matters far beyond appearance.

At Vispring, every mattress is still built around hand craftsmanship.

Each spring is nested individually by hand.
Natural fibres are layered with care.
Spring tensions are adjusted with precision.
Not for marketing copy.

For the person who will return to it every night for the next thirty years.
A thoughtfully made mattress does not announce itself.

Its value reveals itself quietly over time.
In consistency.
In familiarity.
In the feeling of returning every evening to something made with genuine care.

You do not simply use it.
You live with it.

That is why the Vispring New York showroom exists. Not to rush a purchase, but to give people the time and space to experience what genuine craftsmanship feels like.
