One of the most overlooked places for art in a home is the bathroom which, let’s face it, is a room where you spend a lot of time. This is the place where you typically begin and end your day, so why not make it a space that feels thoughtfully considered and just a little transporting. For my former bathroom, I started with a beautiful soft blue wall color that echoed the mosaic tile in the shower, and then layered in a couple of pieces that harmonized with those tones. The result felt calm, curated, personal, and infinitely more interesting than staring at a blank wall while brushing your teeth.

Delight yourself with beautiful images in your bathroom. Make it a print room with multiple pieces in a series or hang really large pieces for dramatic impact. Either way, the effort will elevate your mood and make your next trip a happier one.

The art you select has to have a feeling of resonance to be truly wall-worthy. And that’s why the art you hang in your home is the real game changer. It’s not the sofa or the chair in the room that tells your story: it’s the art.

It doesn’t matter if it’s an heirloom piece or brand new: as long it makes you feel something, it’s a keeper. In fact, mixing old and new (whether it’s art OR furniture), has a way of creating a kind of friction I refer to as “good tension”. If the mix is done well, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. This contrast is what makes a home feel collected instead of staged: soulful, not sterile. Your home should feel like YOU the second you walk through the door and that has everything to do with the artful selections you chose to put in it.

Rant: the reason that a lot of interior design looks so lather, rinse, repeat these days is that much of it is bought off the rack and therefore, impersonal. It may give you a look for a minute (before the inevitable “trend decay” sets in), but it won’t have staying power. The one thing that will continue to work for you year after year, move after move, is the art you buy because it speaks to you.

Nothing brings more life to your home than another living thing like a plant, tree or flower, and while not everyone wants trees and plants, I wouldn’t think of installing a home without bringing in loads of flowers. For those of you who are brand new here or have been deprived of my presence in your life (so sad for you!), I’ve decided to excavate a recent “oldie but goodie”! This was a full home transformation completed in one very long day, fueled by lots of caffeine, the expert assistance of my brilliant organizers and the unshakable knowledge that the client would be returning by the end of day. From room to room, you can see just how much rearranging, styling, and problem solving went into this day (and goes into every makeover!). Nothing about this process is random. It’s a system and if you “get with the program” (and by that I mean my course Refind 🤣….plug), it will really change the way your entire home feels.

People frequently ask what makes the biggest difference in a space, and for me, it’s the floor plan. When you have a rock solid floor plan, everything magically falls into place and the room suddenly “relaxes”. There’s ample seating, the space is easy to move through and it functions beautifully (there’s a place for lamplight, to put down a drink, and to showcase meaningful items).

I’m curious: What’s one area in your home that, regardless of what you do, it never quite feels right. The answers are always fascinating and, more often than not, completely fixable. I’ll select a few comments to respond to as part of an exciting project being announced soon!
