“Mais oui tu es belle” (“But yes — you are beautiful”) on a glass wall near the Palais de Tokyo, Paris.

Mirrors have been appearing around the city for years—maybe 20 to 50 in total—each carrying the same line. You catch your reflection, read it, and the city gives you a quiet, unexpected lift.

Self-Portrait of My Sister, 194I, by Gertrude Abercrombie (American, 1909-1977).

At first glance, Self-Portrait of My Sister appears to be a straightforward representation of a young woman in hat and gloves. The title's contradictory language, however, reveals that this painting is a riddle: by definition, a self-portrait depicts the artist. To add to the conundrum, Chicagoan Gertrude Abercrombie was an only child—she had no sister to portray. Instead, she used self-portraiture as a means of trying on new personas and appearances, later observing, "It's always myself that I paint, but not actually, because I don't look that good or cute." Abercrombie titled this work in her records "Portrait of the Artist as Ideal." This language, coupled with her reference to a fictitious sister, hints at a desire to be a different person, a longing that she could indulge through her painting.

James McNeill Whistler’s Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (Portrait of the Artist’s Mother) (1871), better known as Whistler’s Mother, is among the most celebrated works by an American artist. Often viewed as the most important American painting located outside the US. It’s been owned by the French state since 1891 and is in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay.

Visit to the Basilica Cistern (), Istanbul, Türkiye. It is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns beneath the city. Built in the 6th century under Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it was designed to store and supply water to the Great Palace and nearby buildings. It measures 138 by 65 meters and holds up to 80,000 cubic meters of water. It is supported by 336 marble columns—many recycled from earlier Roman structures.

Baobab Ceramic Sculpted Vase, now at Aleph.

Designed by Toufic ElZein – hand-built using the slab technique, Long Beach clay.

Mr. ElZein’s journey in pottery has been a continuous exploration of hand-building techniques inspired by both the beauty of human forms and the organic shapes of nature. Hands and heads emerged in his previous creations; in the recent ones, the inspiration comes from the flowing, abstract forms that evoke the curves of leaves, the intricate textures of trees, and the dynamic movements of corals. These two separate themes converge to celebrate the harmony between humanity and the natural world.
