Same hands. Same wax. Seven years of pours.

Believe it or not, the the first ones happened on our kitchen counter. The latest ones are happening in our backhouse studio, and somehow it still feels like the same little operation it always was.

Every candle in this video went to someone's home, someone's mom, someone's "just because." Thousands of moments, one pour at a time. 🤍

I lived on Apolena Avenue for one year.

A tiny white house with a marine blue door. Balboa Island. Every
street named for a gemstone, one little bridge in.

It was a transitional year. The kind where you're not sure what's
next, and the only thing to do is keep walking.

So I walked. Down to the bay most mornings. Watched the seals
sneak onto the boats. Let the salt air do whatever it was doing.

That year is what Apolena smells like. Sea salt, sage, a soft bit
of ambrette underneath. The calmest scent we make.

Some scents are invented. This one is remembered. ■

I went to China and found our version of Flora Farms.  Except nobody knows about it, it has no Instagram, and you can never tag it.

Orchard. Beijing. Tucked outside the city in Hegezhuang Village.  You would never find it unless someone told you. A true farm to table experience that has been quietly serving some of the best food in Beijing since 2002. They grow their own organic ingredients right on the property.

Snowball flowers growing naturally everywhere. Peonies. Orchard trees. The most beautiful grounds I have ever walked.

The owner designed every single detail himself. He walked us through the whole property.  The gardens, two restaurants, a coffee bar, the most charming rooms tucked throughout the grounds. It felt like the best kept secret in all of China.

Ranked in the top restaurants in all of Beijing. And almost nobody outside Beijing knows it exists.

Every Backhouse box gets the same thing it always has...care.

Seven years in, our team packs hundreds of these a week now. But the standard hasn't moved. The same paper. The same notecard. The same way it looked when I was packing the very first one out of our backhouse in 2019.
