If these s***f bottles could talk…
S***f was tobacco—finely ground, inhaled through the nose and, as we know now, decidedly not a charming little habit.
But apparently if you’re going to have a vice, you might as well give it fabulous packaging.
Beginning in Qing-dynasty China, s***f became fashionable among the elite, and the containers used to carry it evolved into miniature works of art. Artisans carved and decorated bottles and boxes in porcelain, jade, glass, ivory, bone, wood and other materials, often covering them with elaborate scenes and symbolic imagery.
These carved examples certainly understood the assignment.
Look closely and you’ll find figures, animals, landscapes, mythical imagery and a yin-yang tucked into remarkably detailed surfaces. The contents may have been questionable. The containers? Pretty spectacular.
And centuries later, nobody needs to put s***f in them. They’re fascinating little pieces of decorative history all on their own.
