Coffee Table or Cocktail Table—What’s the Difference?

We use the words interchangeably today, but originally they had slightly different jobs.

☕ Coffee tables became popular as lower tables placed in front of sofas—perfect for serving coffee, tea, books, and everyday necessities.

🍸 Cocktail tables were designed with entertaining in mind—a convenient spot for drinks, glassware, and hors d’oeuvres while guests gathered and socialized. The term became especially popular as cocktail culture took off in the early-to-mid 20th century.

Today, there really isn’t a hard-and-fast difference. Furniture makers and designers often use the terms to describe the same low table in front of a sofa.

What a Great Find! ✨

It’s always fun to learn the history behind the unique pieces our consignors bring into The Redefinery—and this one sent us down a fascinating little rabbit hole.

This is a COMPLETE set of 12 Val Saint Lambert Crystal Zodiac coasters, with each coaster representing one of the twelve astrological signs. Val Saint Lambert has been producing fine crystal in Belgium since 1826 and became renowned for its exceptional clarity, weight, and craftsmanship.

These vintage coasters are believed to date to the 1970s, when astrology and Zodiac-inspired design were especially popular.

Finding all twelve signs together as a complete set makes this an especially rare find. Pieces like these are exactly why we love consignment—you never know what will come through the door, or the story you’ll uncover when it does.

A great find, a bit of history, and definitely a conversation starter. ✨

Sometimes You Have to See Past the Fabric

When shopping vintage or consignment, a little vision can go a long way. A dated fabric or finish can make you walk right past a piece that has everything you should actually be looking for—solid construction, beautiful wood, great proportions, and details you simply don’t find in most new furniture.

Take this dining set. The cane backs, substantial pedestal base, and gorgeous wood tabletop are the stars. Swap the dated upholstery for a fresh neutral fabric, update the finish, and suddenly the entire set feels current again.

Another great merch Monday! There were a lot of ‘moving’ parts, but when you have such a solid team it all comes together beautifully!

We had a delivery of 21 Mercana pieces 😳😍 which will be added to the floor as we process them. Our scissor lift got in on the action too! We took down a couple chandeliers that sold and hung some amazing pendant fixtures. Make sure you look 🆙 when you come in!
