Air mattresses are older than sliced bread. Seriously.

The Smithsonian has a trade catalog from 1896 advertising the “Perfection” Air Mattress—that’s 32 years before the first effective bread-slicing machine went into service. 🤯

And it gets better: a two-part version let each person inflate their own side to a different firmness.

Apparently couples were disagreeing about mattress comfort in the 1800s, too. 😂

🛏️ MATTRESS FACT MONDAY

Think your king-size bed takes up a lot of room?

Guinness World Records lists the world’s largest bed at 86 feet 11 inches by 53 feet 11 inches. A regulation NBA court is 94 by 50 feet—which means their total floor areas are almost identical. 🏀

That’s roughly 4,686 square feet of bed…and somehow somebody would still wake up clinging to the edge while the other person had every blanket. 😂

I don’t carry anything quite that large in Norman, but if you need a bed that fits inside an actual house, I can probably help.

💪 LOCAL SUPPORTS LOCAL

I’ve been training at Forge Training Camp in South OKC for about six weeks now, and it didn’t take long to see that Stefan and the crew are building something special.

Last Saturday, Mattress By Appointment Norman was proud to help sponsor Forge’s first HalfRox. Great gym, great people, and a seriously tough group of competitors doing something positive for themselves and the community.

Watching everyone compete confirmed two things:

1️⃣ HalfRox looks every bit as hard as it sounds.
2️⃣ Anyone who finishes one has definitely earned some serious recovery—and a great night’s sleep. 😂

Maybe Stefan can whip me into good enough shape to do more than sponsor the next one. He’s got his work cut out for him, but we’ll see. 👀

🏌️‍♂️ A little Sooner spotlight for the timeline.

Preston is heading into his sophomore year with OU Men’s Golf, and he stopped by to get his sleep setup dialed in for the season ahead.

He went with a jumbo pillow-top cooling hybrid mattress, a Zoned Gel Dough pillow, and a HyperChill mattress protector—so he’s covered from the mattress all the way up.

Between classes, practice, travel, and tournaments, college athletes already have enough moving parts. I’m glad I could make this part easy and help Preston find the right setup for him.

I can’t do much for his short game, but the sleep setup is handled. 😂

💧 MATTRESS FACT MONDAY

Waterbeds didn’t start with s**g carpet, lava lamps, and somebody’s uncle making questionable decorating choices.

They started in a hospital. 😂

In 1832, Scottish physician Dr. Neil Arnott designed a hydrostatic waterbed for a hospital patient in danger from bedsores. The goal was to support the body more evenly and reduce pressure on vulnerable areas.

It was a long way from the vinyl waterbeds that became famous in the 1970s—but the basic idea began with patient care.

So before waterbeds were groovy, they were medical.

Be honest: would you have guessed “hospital invention” or “1970s bedroom trend”? 👀

👑 MATTRESS FACT MONDAY

A California King sounds like the standard King got the luxury upgrade package.

It didn’t. 😂

A Cal King is 4 inches longer—but it’s also 4 inches narrower—than a standard King. That actually leaves it with 32 fewer square inches of total sleeping surface.

In plain English:

🦶 Tall sleeper who wants more legroom? California King.
🤝 Want more room side-to-side? Standard King.

Neither one is automatically better. They’re just different proportions for different sleepers and different rooms. That’s why I always ask how you sleep, who’s sharing the bed, and what space you’re working with before recommending a size.

Be honest: did you think California King meant King+? 👀
