In Poland, children write letters to Saint Nicholas (Święty Mikołaj) before December 6th, listing good deeds and desired small gifts, then on the eve they clean their shoes, put them outside and leave him a small token usually food and drink for him to have, often on a window sill. Then on St. Nicholas Day (Mikołajki), the children find small presents; hand written holy prayers, nuts, cake, chocolates, bread, coins, bells for their shoes, oranges, pierniki (gingerbread cookies), and small toys; blocks, tops, whistles.
