I can't believe I'm saying this, but THE SHEEP DETECTIVES has absolutely no business being this charming, or this emotional. This was a beautiful movie, and it made my eyes rain.
Based on the beloved novel Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann, the film follows a flock of unusually observant sheep after their shepherd turns up dead, prompting them to secretly aid a local detective in unraveling the mystery. Yes, it’s basically Knives Out by way of wool, and somehow that works ridiculously well.
The voice cast is absolutely stacked, with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O'Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and Brett Goldstein all lending warmth, humor, and personality to every baa and suspicious glance. They're all very sweet, as well as often hilarious. Yet even with limited screen time, Hugh Jackman becomes the beating heart of the story as shepherd George, his warmth lingering over every moment even after he exits the screen. There's simply nothing this guy cannot do.
What catches you off guard is how surprisingly emotional the film becomes, quietly wrestling with grief and loss beneath all the cozy mystery antics. It never loses sight of being a safe, family-friendly experience, though, balancing heart with clever humor and somehow keeping it light enough for kids even when there's murder afoot. Even with CGI sheep everywhere, the movie sucks you in and makes you believe these are truly sentient beings solving a crime and living their best lives.
And the real winner? The genuinely inventive way the sheep become detectives in their own right, nudging clues and observations toward the baffled local investigator. It’s witty, heartfelt, and far smarter than you expect from a movie starring livestock.
The Sheep Detectives is already a highlight of the Summer, and it's only May. It's also most certainly worthy of a trip to the cinema.
