Available from Antiques Dealers' Association of America dealers Ron & Joyce Bassin of “A Bird In Hand Antiques,” this Grenfell Mission work known as “Capelin” features a rare artistic arrangement of Capelin fish in a beautifully colored mat. Hand-hooked from silk stockings by Grenfell Labrador Industries, this mat was hand made in Newfoundland & Labrador circa the 1930’s

The Capelin fish themselves are a work of art in this piece. In nature, the models are delightful small fish living in large schools. As a vital component of the food chain of the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and Arctic, they serve as a main food source for a myriad of species including humpback, minke, and finback whales, cod, and harp seals. Their movement inshore is followed by the cod and whales. Capelin are also important to the fishing industry, where they are caught and sold for use in garden fertilizers and dog food.

We hope you will join us in welcoming Zac Ziebarth as the incoming President of the Antiques Dealers' Association of America! Ziebarth is a second-generation dealer and collector of early objects who has been surrounded by the antiques industry his entire life. Currently, he is co-owner of Ziebarth's Gallery which specializes in Antique Americana, Native American Art, and Historical Militaria.

ADA dealer Don Olson thrives on finding superior examples of American Antiques and Folk Art, particularly those that represent an early period and retain original color. He particularly enjoys introducing younger people to the joys of living with material culture, and he’s an expert on helping seasoned collectors manage their collections!

When asked to share a favorite object right now, Olson sent this photograph of an EXCEPTIONAL INLAID CHERRYWOOD CANDLESTAND attributed to cabinetmaker NATHAN LUMBARD of Worcester County (Sturbridge), Massachusetts, ca. 1800. This example illustrates how the fashionable neoclassical design elements commonly found in cities at the time might be interpreted by a talented country cabinetmaker. Further, as stated in one of the Chipstone volumes, the work of Nathan Lumbard shows: “….superior craftsmanship, love of complex inlay and an impeccable sense of design and proportion”.

Excellent original condition with just a minor old repair at the outer edge of one top-lobe. Original dry surface. Diminutive size of about 25 5/8 inches tall. Currently for sale through Don Olson, Fine American Antiques and Folk Art.
